It’s true that they don’t make good romantic comedies anymore

July 4, 2017 by Malin 1 Comment

This was the most recent book club entry in the Cannonball Book Club, where the theme was movie related non-fiction. It wasn’t the book I voted for, but book clubs are all about expanding ones horizons and reading things you wouldn’t necessarily pick yourself, so I downloaded it from the library and started reading. Sadly, on the day of the actual book club discussion, I was feeling unwell, and not really able to take part as much as I would have liked. Of course, now it’s […]

The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey

She’s up all night for good fun….she’s up all night to finish the girl with all the gifts

July 4, 2017 by tillie Leave a Comment

“If the road to knowledge was paved with dead children she’d still walk it” I read this book in two days. I stayed up at night, survived work all bleary eyed and then went home to read more. This book is tense, y’all. It opens with Melanie a smart girl, a girl dreaming about Greek mythology. She likes Pandora. She likes the name and the box and the hope that is unleashed with the evil. “And then like Pandora, opening the great big box of […]

“I don’t know why it’s so hard for people to admit that sometimes they’re just assholes who screw up because they don’t expect to get caught.”

July 3, 2017 by scootsa1000 1 Comment

Last year, at my college reunion, I was lucky enough to spend some time catching up with Karen McManus. After we exchanged the usual pleasantries, she told me something unbelievably interesting: she had signed a deal with Delacourte/Random House, and had a YA book coming out in 2017. Amazing, right? So, I waited patiently for the book to come out. And the buzz was crazy, so I started to wait sort of impatiently. And finally, I stopped by my favorite local bookstore and bought it […]

Murder, British History, and Unreliable Narrators

July 2, 2017 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

I’m a pretty big fan of historical fiction, and I love a good mystery, so when I get my hands on a historical mystery, well watch out. And this one also employs one of my favorite techniques, the unreliable narrator. Wait, what’s that you say, multiple unreliable narrators? Stop it, you’re killing me! The main action of An Instance of the Fingerpost takes place in 1660s Oxford, after the Restoration of Charles II to the throne. I say “main action,” because the story is told […]

Dangerous Duke Seeks Revenge, Finds Romance

June 29, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This is the first book in a new series by Madeline Hunter, the Decadent Dukes Society, and it’s definitely a slow burn romance.  It took me awhile to get into the story, but once I did I began to enjoy the relationship building that was a change from insta-lust that so often occurs.  There’s also some drama of long standing family rivalries to deal with, and the mystery of the hero’s father’s death to be resolved. Adam Penrose, Duke of Stratton, is recently returned from France […]

A Knight Like No Other

June 27, 2017 by Mikki Blu Leave a Comment

This is a medieval era romance, set in the time of Henry II , written by the same woman who penned the Sebastian St. Cyr mysteries.  Candice Proctor is her real name, and she had written several historical romances as such before using the pen name C.S. Harris.  Having enjoyed that series so much, I was curious to see what her older books were like. Lady Attica d’Alerion is nineteen and betrothed for political reasons to a fourteen year old boy named Fulk the Fat.  […]
