Quiet is less about quiet than it is about people and how to embrace the diversity of personalities we see at school, at home, at work. This isn’t a book that shouts its thesis, despite the title, but demonstrates it calmly and thoughtfully.
Victorian era sensational mystery
I need to preface this review by saying this was my first foray into an audible book. Audible was offering a free trial month with two books, so I decided to give it a shot and picked out this book along with the next one in the series. I wasn’t sure how I’d like the experience, as I don’t have a long commute and I mostly prefer to read actual books as opposed to Kindle – but it was quite entertaining and it didn’t take […]
More than Kin, less than kind
Language is a damn funny thing. Not only the language we speak, but the way language shapes how we perceive the world, and also how we all end up with linguistic tics born of our job, our position in life, our hobbies, and other factors we probably aren’t even aware of. Not sure how this relates to a novel about thieves in a magical world? Step inside, won’t you — we have much to talk about.
“Oh there ain’t no other way. Baby I was born this way.”
With graphic novels, you can unashamedly say that you bought a book based entirely on its cover. What intrigued me about the cover of Monstress was the stunningly beautiful artwork juxtaposed with the title, which clearly implied something, well, monstrous. What’s inside is a beautifully written high fantasy story that blends Eastern and Western art and deals with issues like war, racism, and slavery and also features wonderfully complex female characters. The story is centered around Maika Halfwolf an Arcanics. Arcanics are human-animal hybrids […]
Which witch is which?
I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I’ve read my share of YA books, even though I’m clearly not the target audience, but this one just didn’t hold my interest. The premise sounded good: A stunning debut tells a bewitching story: two girls, one ancient prophecy. Only one can be queen of the witches.; the reviews on Amazon were glowing, the cover is pretty, and the second book in the trilogy had been touted as just as wonderful. Alas, my adult self […]
Who do you run to when there’s no one to trust?
Daniel hasn’t heard from his parents in months, since they moved to an idyllic farmstead in Sweden to retire. When his father calls and tells him that his mother is sick, that her mind has failed her, it’s a shock. Even more so when his mother calls and says that his father is involved in a criminal conspiracy, and is trying to have her committed in order to keep her quiet. Daniel’s mother runs London to him to tell him her story of terrible crimes […]
