Banned Book? Well, Banned Author, Anyway

September 23, 2017 by ElCicco 2 Comments

I’m kicking off banned book week with a book that has gotten a lot of attention, both positive and negative, in Catholic circles. Is it a banned book? If it isn’t yet it probably will be. The author has been banned from several Catholic speaking engagements because of it. But he has also received support from prominent bishops and wouldn’t have been able to publish without support from his order, the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). This book, considered incendiary by alt-right Catholics, is not really […]

“The poems were cool. The best ones were like bombs, and when all the right words came together it was like an explosion.”

I’m still making my way through the constantly growing pile of books I need to read for work. I need to be able to comment on some of our “new and noteworthy” books picks, so if parents or teachers want recommendations, I can easily help them out. Oh, your kid likes dark fantasy and Neil Gaiman? Try The Girl Who Drank The Moon. You say your kid likes sports, but really isn’t much of a reader? Well, then get some books by Kwame Alexander. And […]

“I fight every day, and too many times it’s just not enough and the fear wins. I’m so fucking weak and everything is so fucking intense and sometimes I really hate it…”

Queens of Geek is a cute story about three friends attending a convention in California, SupaCon. The two girls narrate the story. Charlie is a YouTube celebrity and rising movie star. Her career is the reason they are there. She wants to do publicity for her movie and show her fans that she’s over her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, costar Reese. She starts to fall for a fellow YouTuber, Alyssa, and things get complicated when Reese shows up. Meanwhile, Taylor has anxiety and Asperger’s, so […]

“And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren’t for you meddling kids…”

I was a huge fan of Scooby Doo as a child. I loved the dog, the mystery solving, and Daphne’s groovy purple dress and shoes. I’m pretty sure that I watched any and every version of Scooby Doo that was available. I saw Scooby Apocalypse available through my library website, so I figured I would give it a shot. Scooby Apocalypse offers a hardcore version of our beloved characters. Shaggy works at an underground lab training the enhanced smart dogs. His favorite among them is […]

If you think about it, we all have a fairy tale kind of life

September 21, 2017 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

This Is How It Always Is is a sort of fairy tale about a mom who wished for a daughter, a dad who tells stories, siblings who watch out for each other, and how even if you do everything just right, life is never easy. This is the story of parents doing their best to raise their transgender child in a world that fears and rejects those who don’t fit cultural norms. It is clever, funny and heartbreaking, and enlightening. Frankel happens to be the […]

An impressive depiction of a complex friendship spanning decades

September 21, 2017 by Malin Leave a Comment

I’m going to begin by including a brief summary of each of the individual books in the series, before reviewing all books as a whole, as I don’t think it’s possible for me to talk about my reading experience and impression of these books individually. My Brilliant Friend We are introduced to the two protagonists of the series, in our narrator Elena Greco (also sometimes called Lenuccia or Lenu) and her best friend Raffaela (called Lena by most people, but Lila by Elena). As with […]
