4.5 stars Ildiko is a human woman, the less than favoured niece of the Gauri king. To cement an important political alliance she’s been promised in marriage to Prince Brishen of Bast-Haradis, a Kai warrior and the younger son to the ruthless ruling couple. Humans and Kai, for all that they share similar anatomical traits are very different, both in looks and cultural values. The Kai have black, unreadable eyes, sharp features, grey skin, long claws and a mouth full of sharp fangs and are […]
Tell me something I haven’t imagined before
I’m having very mixed feelings about “Station Eleven.” It sure checks a lot of boxes for me including post-apocalyptic survival, a plague, interconnected characters, graceful exposition, and a creepy antagonist. But it misses the mark on originality and heart. Hard to summarize, and it skips back and forward in time a lot (effortlessly, to its credit), this is the story of a handful of individuals affected by a civilization-ending strain of the swine flu. These people are all connected through their various relationships with a […]
A Stalker with a Heart of Gold and a Perfect Dead Wife (This Book has It All)
I realized I had a few more Liane Moriarty books to check off my list to be a completionist– having just finished The Last Anniversary last week, I think I’m down to just one book left. And that’s sad because I can’t say that I loved this book, i’m really hoping that my last book will be better and give me a little reminder of what I loved from her other books. Because this one? I just felt majorly perplexed by it. We start […]
In which our heroine changes everything
Queen of Shadows – Reviewed on KatsCannon “She was fire, and light, and ash, and embers. She was Aelin Fireheart, and she bowed for no one and nothing, save the crown that was hers by blood and survival and triumph.” I have completely failed to review any of this brilliant series on this blog. You’ll have to search this website to find some other reviews. Suffice it to say that while I will not discuss major spoilers from this volume here (or will properly hide them […]
It’s Not How You Start, It’s How You Finish
This final book in the Old Filth Trilogy gives us the story of Terry Veneering, lover of Betty Feathers, romantic and professional rival of Eddie/Filth. It also fleshes out a few of the secondary characters from the previous two novels, notably Dulcie Willy and Fred Fiscal-Smith. Gardam continues the recurring themes of being orphaned, alienated and lacking love within the context of pre- and post-war England (1930s into the 1950s). Each novel is told from the perspective of old age and end of life, which […]
Yes, I Do Feel All Out of Sorts
At the halfway point of reading Aurélie Valognes’s debut Out of Sorts (2016), my mind took me to Rose’s dream sequence in the Golden Girls’ season 1 episode “A Little Romance.” It was a farcical scene that brought on much laughter mostly because of the brilliance of the four lead actresses. As an audience member, I could follow along because the set up had been clear. I was in on the joke. That wasn’t the case when I got to the midpoint of Out of Sorts. I started to […]
