I have peered into a new corner of the contemporary romance genre with these two novels, one known as “secret baby”. Once Upon a Half-Time and Bad Boy’s Bridesmaid both feature a player and a sensible woman whose precipitous actions lead to an absolutely conventional conclusion. These Sosie Frost books also happen to have an African-American heroine and a Caucasian-American hero. HUZZAH! for diversity, especially when it means that a romance novel looks more like the real world. The race issue is not particularly highlighted in Once Upon […]
Unlikeable Characters Make for a Very Good Novel
The House at the Edge of the World is a daring novel in that it dares you to care about a group of characters who are selfish, self-absorbed and angry, and who essentially stay that way throughout the story. Julia Rochester’s clever novel is the story of a family mystery and its slow unraveling. Our narrator Morwenna Venton tells us about the death of her father John, the strange map that her grandfather Matthew has spend a lifetime drawing, and her dysfunctional relationships with her […]
Further adventures in Star Wars origami
Ah, yes, the saga continues. I’m slightly concerned that the fact that the kids in these books are in junior high, and my kid is only going into 3rd grade, but most of the concepts aren’t too far beyond him. Although he scrunches his nose at the chapters where the boys and girls talk about liking each other. Thank goodness! Anyway, we rejoin the kids of McQuarrie Middle School and their troubles. Dwight is still weird, Harvey is still a jerk, and Tommy and Kellen […]
GFY Sizzle
New to reading m/m romances, I was taken aback by the raw, coarse, and descriptive language of Nick and Bryce’s sexual encounters, which seemed to occur at about every other page after the initial friendship building set up. As a result, I certainly got some updated sex education reading Crossroads, a Gay-for-You romance. Read the full review.
A nice contemporary romance without too much angst
Lily Danville grew up in Cedar Ridge, Colorado, and loved hiking the mountain trails or climbing the rock faces in the summer, or skiing the challenging slopes in the winter. She was happy there, until tragedy struck and she lost half her family over the course of a few weeks. She’s never forgiven herself and wasn’t ever planning on returning. Having lost her job in a fashionable salon in San Diego and pretty much been blacklisted in the industry, she desperately needs a job, and […]
Werewolves of (Victorian) London
Daisy Craigmore doesn’t mourn her abusive d-bag of a husband at all, but has nonetheless worn widow’s weeds for the proscribed period of time, so as to avoid a scandal. Now she’s pretty ready to get her flirt on, but her first “date” of sorts, is ruined when she comes across her friend torn to pieces in an ally, and the beast that killed her ready to tear into Daisy and her lover next. The mysterous Ian Ranulf, Marquis of Northrup, insists on protecting her, […]
