Ending the Circle of Revenge

July 31, 2016 by ElCicco 2 Comments

We are chased into this life. We are chased by what we do to others and then in turn what they do to us. We’re always looking behind us, or worried about what comes next. Margaret Atwood, Toni Morrison and Louise Erdrich form the holy trinity of contemporary writers for me. They each produce impeccable novels on a regular basis, featuring strong but very human characters who are dealing with complicated and heartbreaking situations, and usually ending with pain tempered by some small hope. Race, […]

Halfway to Goal

July 29, 2016 by Orleanas Leave a Comment

The premise seems compelling: Two boys, same name, same background, same neighborhood. However, one becomes a Rhode Scholar and the other becomes an inmate serving a life sentence. What led to these boys’ diverging paths? A reporting and analysis would be presented. Only, the final product did not deliver on that premise. Wes Moore’s The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates (2010) is a New York Times bestseller that is now common on many schools’ summer reading list. That’s how I came about purchasing it. […]

Thanks, CBR book club. I’m glad I read this one.

I was glad that this was the book we chose for the next installment of the CBR book club. I had been meaning to read it for ages. And while it wasn’t what I expected (first off, this book was way more “Y” than I generally expect in a “YA” book), it certainly didn’t disappoint. Arnold “Junior” Spirit lives on a Spokane reservation in rural Washington (I think) with his mother, father, sister, and grandmother. They live in poverty, familiar with hatred and racism, engulfed […]

Stiletto is easily the best book you’ll read this year with a lead character trapped in a blowhole.

Hundreds of books ago (way back in CBR4), I jumped on The Rook bandwagon. I adored the story of the bizarre supernatural government bureau, the crazy powers that its members and employees have, and its high-ranking official who wakes up one day surrounded by dead bodies and no clue where — or who — she is. When I hear that the sequel, Stiletto, was FINALLY coming out, I realized that I desperately needed to do a re-read of The Rook. It was so full of amazing details and characters, […]

“But are they the right sort of pe..”” zzzzzz

July 26, 2016 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

I should start out by saying I am NOT a fan of Jane Austen or the whole “comedy of manners” oeuvre. The only book in that genre that I’ve ever really liked is The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton which takes a decidedly darker turn than Austen or Forster. Needless to say that this book, while only about 150 pages long felt like a slog through a War and Peace sized book. But instead of the Napoleonic wars, I got some silly girl’s search […]

Even without David Tennant, these books get a big thumbs up.

July 25, 2016 by scootsa1000 2 Comments

Like everyone else in the world who has Netflix, my husband and I binged Jessica Jones last year. And we loved it. I’m not a huge Marvel person, so to me, that was a big deal. I’ve only seen one of the Avengers movies, I hated the two Thor movies that I saw, thought the first Captain America was a bore (although, I quite liked the second one), and have abstained almost completely from the X-Men ouevre. And I hated Daredevil on Netflix. Couldn’t even […]
