Can I have the next one now, please?

August 19, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

July brought another volume of Saga and there was great rejoicing in the Patterson household (well, at least from me, the husband is still a few books behind. I honestly have no idea where his priorities are). The action has jumped ahead a few years since we last saw our band of plucky protagonists, and Hazel is now living with her grandmother in a detention centre on Landfall, and she’s going to kindergarten and making friends her own age for the first time. She’s becoming […]

In which Kamala meets Wolverine and gets a giant teleporting dog

August 19, 2016 by Malin 2 Comments

Kamala Khan has gotten better at juggling her life as a teenage girl with her secret identity as Ms. Marvel. She shoulders her responsibilities as well she can, even when being inundated both in school and in the media that her generation of teens are really just parasites on society, draining it of precious resources and brainlessly just existing in a multi-media reality, without ever giving anything back or asking necessary and critical questions. She geeks out adorably when given a chance to team up […]

History, Political Intrigue and a Little Bit of Magic for Good Measure

August 18, 2016 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

This book contains lots of things I love (history, political intrigue and magic) along with some great character development throughout the course of the story. If I found out HBO or AMC decided to make this book into a miniseries I’d squeal and clap my hands like a little girl. The result, if done well, would be an exciting and colorful ride through late 18th Century Sweden. The story centers around Emil Larsson, a bureaucrat living in Stockholm during the reign of King Gustav […]

A Mile in Their Shoes

August 18, 2016 by ElCicco 1 Comment

I don’t know if author Carolyn Parkhurst has a child on the autism spectrum, but if she does not, then she is an incredibly thorough researcher and empath. Her latest novel Harmony focuses on a Washington, DC, family of four who join a sort of commune in New Hampshire in order to help their 13-year-old daughter Tilly, who has an autism diagnosis. The leader of Camp Harmony, Scott Bean, is an independent educator whose approach to working with children on the spectrum and their families […]

Wayward Pines – Reviews 14-16

August 15, 2016 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

I’m probably the last person to read these books, but I finally got around to it. I’m still not sure how I feel about the series. They’re either the most brilliant things I’ve ever read, or the dumbest thing ever put on paper (or screen, in my case). Don’t get me wrong, the books are compelling, and I lost a couple of nights of decent sleep because I just had to find out what was going to happen next. But (spoilers ahead, in case I’m not […]
