Her Hair Is Black, Just FYI

Offside (The Barker Triplets Book 1) by Juliana Stone

September 14, 2016 by Mrs. Julien Leave a Comment

Offside is a contemporary romance featuring triplet sisters facing real world problems in a small town. Domestic reality elements aren’t something I particularly look for in a book, though the billionaires aren’t either because, apparently, there is no pleasing me, but Juliana Stone provides a middling romance with some above average charm and a wry, realistic sounding voice. “But Billie… she had him wanting to circle the room and piss in all the corners like a dog marking his territory. What the hell was up with that?” From […]

One hell of a trilogy

September 13, 2016 by Malin 3 Comments

I’m going to review this whole trilogy in one review. As such, there is bound to be some spoilers, and if you want to go in completely cold, you may want to skip this review and just trust me that while the first book is a bit slow, and not the most engaging of reads on its own, the trilogy as a whole is mighty compelling reading, and well worth your time. At least if you like well-written fantasy, tons of political intrigue and plots […]

These audiobooks are great. But they’re also terrible. Hells bells, I don’t know what I think.

I’ve now read the first three installments in the Harry Dresden series. Or, to be more specific, I’ve now listened to James Marsters read me the first three installments in the Harry Dresden series. And I still don’t really know what I think. Let me explain. I have no idea what is going on in these books. Yes, I understand that Harry is a wizard who lives in Chicago. I get that he works indirectly with the police and with other, less reputable members of […]

Scaling Back from Triple to Double-Secret Probation

Grin and Beard It by Penny Reid

September 13, 2016 by Mrs. Julien 3 Comments

One of my romance compatriots and I have agreed that with this second entry into her Winston Brother contemporary romance series, Penny Reid has been moved back from triple secret probation to double secret probation, maybe even single overt probation.  Baby steps. A family of seven children, the Winstons live in rural Tennessee. The lone sister, Ashley has found a partner in the novel I like best for the siblings so far, Beauty and the Mustache, and her brother Duane has had his time at bat […]

Shellfish Allergy Alert

September 12, 2016 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

I grew up on the south shore of Long Island, digging barefoot for clams in Moriches Bay. We’d just scoot our feet back and forth, like doing the twist, until we hit something (sometimes it was a razor clam, which, while delicious, is responsible for some bottom-of-the-foot scarring that persists to this day), grab it, grab our knife, open it, and slurp that puppy right out of the shell. So I’m clearly not raw shellfish averse (and so very glad that I’m not allergic!). But […]

Jumping on the bandwagon here.

September 12, 2016 by scootsa1000 1 Comment

Can I just write that I agree with everyone else, and that this is the new Act Like It? Or do I need to say more? How about, if you like (or think you might like) Contemporary Romance, that picking this one up is a no-brainer? This book is witty, filled with delicious and snarky conversation, admirably romantic, and just the right amount of steamy. I mean, jeez. This book makes a night spent sitting on a couch and holding hands while watching ER and eating […]
