Spoilers Then Annoyances for a Kissing Book

A Stone in the Sea by A.L. Jackson

November 15, 2016 by Mrs. Julien 6 Comments

I’m going to start this review with a quick plot summary, move on to a negative expostulation, and finish up with the notes I made while reading. Sebastian (Baz) and his band members are in exile on Tybee Island, Georgia because he beat a powerful business contact “within an inch of his life” for serious non-specified harm done to his brother. Stepping out at night, Baz meets Shea waiting tables at her uncle’s local bar. They fight their attraction for 1.2 seconds… something, something,  I […]

“I am become a blade”

November 12, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! This is the third book in the Grisha trilogy and therefore NOT the place to start reading. This review will contain at least some minor spoilers for the previous books in the series, and who starts a trilogy with the third book anyway? Go read from the beginning, starting with Shadow and Bone. This review will be here when you’re caught up. Alina is shadow of her former self, trapped in tunnels underground, “protected” by the zealous Apparat (former high priest of Ravka) […]

What the world needs now is the Super Happy Magic Forest.

November 11, 2016 by scootsa1000 6 Comments

After a crazy week, there’s nothing like an amazingly clever and funny children’s book to put a smile on your face. My seven year old brought this one home from the library yesterday, and its a new favorite. Here’s what she has to say about it: “Everyone lives in the Super Happy Magic Forest where everything is great. There are some warriors who were sent to find the missing Magic Crystals of Life that were stolen. They went on a big quest through DANGER. First, […]

“And they burned waxily ever after…”

November 10, 2016 by Caitycat 1 Comment

Save Wax is about a town called Paraffin, Vermont, and how some of its residents were murdered and replaced with wax figures. It’s also really, really funny. One of the residents, Poppy, was disgraced on a nationally televised talent show. She throws herself into serving as president of the drama club, the Giddy Committee. After her biggest bully pulls yet another prank on her, Poppy visits the local candle factory to get to the bottom of things. She ends up meeting a mysterious old woman […]

“Like Digby himself said: The truth is almost always disappointing…”

November 10, 2016 by Caitycat 1 Comment

Save Trouble Is a Friend of Mine is a mystery with an overachieving girl, Zoe, and a boy who is a young version of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock. Digby is brusque and tactless, he even looks like Cumberbatch. He just shows up outside her door one day, and next thing you know, they are searching for a missing girl and investigating the possible cult across the street from her new house. Sin and Redemption

November 8, 2016 by ElCicco 1 Comment

I seem to be on a bit of a Russian kick these days. Many years ago, I read several Dostoyevsky novels but I really don’t remember a thing about them. I decided to revisit Crime and Punishment not only because it is, perhaps, the best known of his novels but also because it’s less than 300 pages long. Turns out, it’s also quite the page turner — a psychological drama involving a murderer whose physical and mental health deteriorate as an investigator closes in on […]
