This is book three in The Others series, which is one of my absolute favourite paranormal fantasy series at the moment. While you are given enough information to start with this one, you’ll get the most enjoyment if you start at the beginning, with the excellent Written in Red. There will also be minor spoilers for the earlier books in the series here, so if you don’t like that sort of thing, skip the review until you’re caught up. In a world where humans are […]
Why Don’t We Know Dawn Powell?
I hadn’t heard of writer Dawn Powell (1896-1965) until last year when her name came up the the New York Times book review section called “By The Book,” wherein the Times provides a series of questions to writers about their reading habits. Anjelica Huston — model, actress, and memoirist — mentioned Powell as a favorite writer whose works deserved to be filmed but, curiously, never had been. So I looked her up and discovered that Powell moved from Ohio to New York in the early […]
Historical Romance with a Foxy Mary Poppins
“Foxy Mary Poppins!” is as far as I got in my review last October and it does really say it all about this entry in Jennifer Ashley’s frequently overwrought, yet personally strangely compelling and habit-forming, Mackenzie historical romance series. I read ALL of her Mackenzie stories and yet I don’t recommend any of them. I lovehate them. Why both? Because Ashley excels at moments of sincere romance while simultaneously over-plotting her novels, thus turning them into melodrama. They have gotten better in time, but Rules […]
All the Single Ladies
In a world soaked in magic, in a city choked with people, in a University cluttered with men, it’s going to take a woman to set things right. Read about it here.
Second Verse, Same As the First
Sam Sisavath’s second book of survival picks up where the first book left off…and I predict that this is how all the books are going to go. There’s going to be a metaphorical carrot of safety dangled in front of them, they’ll go for it and that safety will be revoked…or so it seems to go. Chapter by chapter we get a story told from the perspective of different characters from varying sides (good guys, bad guys, undead peeps). We have Will and Danny, […]
All Is Not Fair In Love And War
I typically shy away from war or militaristic stories, but the boarding school aspect of this young adult book hooked me. That particular trope is like catnip for me and the high school setting definitely made the militaristic aspects more accessible. I’m happy to say this was a great read. Sam McKenna comes from a military family. Her father is a high-ranking member of the Army and her two older brothers excelled at the prestigious Denmark Military Academy at which Sam has decided to enroll. […]
