There are few things I enjoy more than a well crafted scary short story. As a kid cutting my teeth on Stephen King I loved his short story collections more than anything. Still do for that matter. My favorite collection of King’s is Skeleton Crew. Horror classics like “The Raft”, “The Jaunt”, and “Survivor Type” haunted me for years after reading them. Still do. In recent years Neil Gaiman’s short stories have filled the void King left for me. The first collection I read, Smoke […]

Alas, even an exploding whale couldn’t save this one.
Here is a brief list of things that I enjoy more than I enjoyed this book: Getting my teeth cleaned. A colonoscopy. Going to the grocery store. Making three interesting & healthy bag lunches every day for my kids. Helping with math homework. Doing laundry. Driving on the beltway. Shoveling snow. Dusting. Vacuuming my car. Cleaning up confetti. Eating radishes. Here’s a list of what I did like about this book: Exploding whales. I did not like this book. I got it from some sort […]
Disappointed with Pullman
After very much enjoying several of Philip Pullman’s other books (His Dark Materials and companion books, The Firework Maker’s Daughter and The Scarecrow and His Servant), I had high hopes for the Sally Lockhart Mysteries. In the first book, The Ruby in the Smoke, we meet Sally who, at age 16, has been recently orphaned. She is curious to know more about the circumstances of her father’s death after receiving some ambiguous information. Sally has had a very nontraditional upbringing in 1872 Victorian London, so […]
Lost in Thought
Before reading this novel, I saw two very different reviews of it. One, in Salon, favorably compared Find Me to Station Eleven and The Handmaid’s Tale. The other, from NPR, found it to be lacking and unworthy of such comparison. My opinion is that while the first half of the story does make it seem as if the novel has the potential to rank up there with esteemed dystopian fiction, the second half disappoints. Laura van den Berg is a seasoned and well regarded writer of […]
