All things are connected. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth.

October 17, 2015 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Purely by coincidence, I read Solar Storms during the week that included Columbus Day — a holiday that made me uncomfortable for some time and now makes me sick. Solar Storms is set amongst Native Americans living in northern Minnesota in 1972-73 as their lands are being overtaken for development. Author Linda Hogan, a Chickasaw writer, uses her gifts for language and character development to tell a spellbinding story of connectivity, brokenness, environmentalism, and spirituality with a focus on four incredibly strong and thoughtful women […]

“I’d made the vampire cry. Great. I felt like a real superhero. Harry Dresden, breaker of monsters’ hearts.” **

One of the things I like most about doing the Cannonball every year is getting recommendations from other ‘ballers for books I might never have heard of otherwise. Honestly, I can’t believe I had never heard of Jim Butcher or Harry Dresden before, and for that I am sorry. And I also can’t believe that its taken me this long to get around to the first of the series, Storm Front. I’m going to admit something to you about Storm Front. I had taken it […]

Late, as ever, to the party

October 14, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

I know everyone read this last year or so, but I’m always behind on these things. Other books I haven’t read yet: The Kite Runner, All the Light We Cannot See, and Life of Pi. But, as usual, there was a Kindle deal on this book, and since I’m a sucker for a good murder mystery, I picked it up. The story alternates between several narrators: Rachel, the actual girl on the train; Anna, Rachel’s replacement in her husband’s life; and Megan, our eventual victim. […]

Are you non-compliant?

October 11, 2015 by ElCicco 1 Comment

Are you non-compliant? Do you fit in your box? Are you too fat, too thin, too loud, too shy, too religious, too secular, too prudish, too sexual, too queer, too black, too brown, too whatever-it-is-they’ll-judge-you-for-today? You may just belong on Bitch Planet When you get a load of Kelly Sue DeConnick’s dystopian world — earth as run by a patriarchy called “the Fathers”–  you might prefer to be on the Auxilliary Compliance Outpost, also known as “Bitch Planet.” In a not-too-distant future, for reasons that […]

A House for the Season Book 5

October 8, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

We’re back in London for yet another season, with the usual gang at 67 Clarges Street. They’ve been working steadily for a few years, saving up what they can so they can quit service and buy their own pub. Of course, not everyone is equally on board with the plan, but at this point it’s the best dream they have, and possibly the most attainable. Back then, once someone was in service, it was very difficult for them to leave. That’s why the staff at […]

“Winner: Everyone who isn’t my editor.”

October 8, 2015 by TylerDFC 2 Comments

A review is really unnecessary here. Just go buy/check out/borrow/steal Furiously Happy and get to reading. It is incredibly funny, incredibly moving, and really, really, REALLY funny. Did I mention it was funny? Because it’s really funny. This isn’t enough to make word quota is it? Do we have a word quota on the CBR blog? I should probably check in to that. No, I’m not just typing to fill out word space. How dare you, good sir or madam. If I had a white […]
