Holding out for a hero…

November 4, 2015 by PattyKates 8 Comments

Katie: Y’all, I want to give a shout out today to Patty for raising her Girl right. Being the great parent she is, Patty has gotten Girl started down the Judy Blume path. Being the great kid she is, Girl has some thoughts and feelings she’d like to share. Patty: Because PattyKates wasn’t enough of a departure, we’ve decided to do a review à trois with my daughter – who henceforth shall be referred to as Girl – being very careful to maintain a level […]

Amster-Dayum!

Jessie Burton’s debut novel The Miniaturist packs a lot of plot and history into its 537 pages. The action takes place in Amsterdam over the course of 3 months, from October 1686 into January 1687, and focuses on the oppressive social and religious restrictions that operated within a booming and expanding economy during the Dutch Golden Age. Eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman, whose family name is old and respected but whose fortunes have faltered, has made a fine match with Johannes Brandt, a successful businessman some 20 […]

I can’t really say anything except to go and read these books. You won’t be sorry.

I just finished reading Carry On, literally seconds ago. And just before that, I had the pleasure of reading Stand Off. Not only were these the two best YA books I’ve read in ages, but they were just two of the best books I’ve read. Ever. Full-stop. Nobody out there can touch Cannonball favorite Rainbow Rowell and Andrew “my Cannonball boyfriend” Smith right now, as far as I’m concerned. Many people have touted Carry On before me. And I”ll gladly jump on that bandwagon, waving […]

The Expanded Universe is dead! Long live the Expanded Universe!

November 3, 2015 by TylerDFC 7 Comments

After Disney bought Lucasfilm and secured the rights to Star Wars they announced that new movies would be coming shortly. As I write this The Force Awakens is less than two months from release and based on a spectacular trailer the fandom hasn’t been this excited since The Phantom Menace was announced back in the late 90’s. At the same time Disney also revealed that the vast catalog of games, books, and comics that detailed the events after Return of the Jedi would no longer […]

“Things had changed and would continue to change until there was room for everyone to have a normal life…”

November 3, 2015 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

This is the sequel to Landry Park, which is a dystopian tale of nuclear power, class warfare, and debutante balls. The story was about Madeline Landry trying to figure out who attacked her friend. She learns about the Rootless people, the lower class who change the nuclear reactors in the manor houses. There are a lot of revelations being revealed. In the sequel, Madeline Landry is back to solve another mystery. This time…things get deadly. The heirs of the Gentry’s elite are being killed. Madeline […]
