Short tale by Flynn a worthwhile read

December 18, 2015 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

The Grownup was originally published likely to fill the gap in new Gillian Flynn product a few years after Gone Girl released and Flynn has been preoccupied with various television outings, including the HBO adaptation of Utopia with David Fincher. The Grownup first appeared in a collection of short stories called Rogues last year, curated by George R.R. Martin. Another writer who does everything else short of writing his their next book. But I digress. Since Flynn stormed the charts with the brilliant Gone Girl there […]

A classic gets a pleasant but unnecessary sequel.

December 17, 2015 by TylerDFC Leave a Comment

The Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol, is one of my favorite books. I love the language, the sly wit, and the simple but timeless story of the redemption of Ebenezer Scrooge. I will confess I’ve never given much thought to what came next but this book is here to answer that question. For those familiar with A Christmas Carol you will immediately notice the descriptions and setup in the sequel is the same as the first book. The book is divided into the same […]

Just look at what I got in the mail from the lovely faintingviolet! Bunnybean and Joemyjoe forbid me to open this until Christmas Eve, but I think I’ll sneak a chocolate before then. Thank you, and happy holidays!!

A very early American mystery

December 16, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

According to some, Ebenezer Gryce was the first American detective in mystery stories. According to Amazon, this book was published before the Sherlock Holmes stories, and “changed the mystery genre forever.” Horatio Leavenworth is murdered in his home. The prime suspects are his nieces, only one of whom stands to gain from his death. But the clues all seem to be pointing to the niece who doesn’t have any skin in the game, so to speak. Mr. Raymond is a junior partner in the law […]

The Century Trilogy is over

December 16, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

I don’t know how Ken Follett does it. All of his books are so very long and dense and filled with story and history and information and characters and other stuff I can’t think of. He’s exhausting. And exhaustive. I wonder what his family is like. I mean, really. What would dinner conversation be like with this guy? He knows everything about medieval Europe and cathedral building, and now he’s got most of Western Civ covered with the Century Trilogy. Plus he writes all those […]

The First Inspector Rutledge

December 16, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

In Warwickshire, Colonel Harris was out for a horseback ride, when he was shot and killed. His “last coherent thought was anger. Savage, wild, black fury ripped through him in one stark instant of realization before oblivion swept it all away. . . .” His reaction to the shotgun blast made him dig his spurs into his horse’s flanks. In London, a guy named Bowles finds out some dirt on Ian Rutledge. He wants to use it, but he doesn’t know how just yet. The […]
