Airships and mercenaries and bandits and adventure

June 22, 2014 by Malin 4 Comments

Part One: The Kraken King and the Scribbling Spinster – 4 stars Part Two: The Kraken King and the Abominable Worm – 4 stars Part Three: The Kraken King and the Fox’s Den – 4.5 stars Part Four: The Kraken King and the Inevitable Abduction – 4 stars Because The Kraken King is being published in eight weekly instalments, I’m going to blog the first four as one book, and the final four as another, mainly because I don’t want to wait until I’ve read all the parts to share my […]

Like Cloud Atlas, only better

June 22, 2014 by popcultureboy 3 Comments

Hoo boy. I said 2014 would be my Year of Big Books and this is most definitely a Big Book in all senses of the word. It is close to 600 pages in hardback with fairly small print, so it’s literally big. It covers a span of over fifty years and many characters, so it’s figuratively also big. And it’s not actually published until September 2nd 2014, so the fact that I have been able to read an advance copy is frankly HUGE. The proof […]

I admit, I’m a slave to Stephen King.

June 21, 2014 by scootsa1000 2 Comments

I’ve been a Stephen King girl ever since summer camp in Jr. High, when someone handed me their copy of The Shining. Later that summer I read The Stand and ‘Salems Lot and every other worn paperback I could get my hands on before camp was over. I was hooked. I’ve read pretty much everything the man has written over the years (not every non-fiction piece, and a few short stories printed in obscure journals have eluded me). Some of his books are among my […]

Cress, Cress, let down your hair!

June 21, 2014 by scootsa1000 Leave a Comment

I’m still so far behind in my reviews, I’m starting to get anxious about it. We are leaving for a month-long vacation next week, and I just might not be able to get a chance to say everything I want and need to say. Sorry that these next few might not get the detail that they deserve 🙁 Even thought it feels like ages ago, I think it was only about two weeks ago that I finished Cress. For those that don’t know (which, really, […]

Hey! This wasn’t as bad as I expected! In fact, I kinda liked it.

I almost feel like I don’t need to tell you anything at all about Jane Austen Goes to Hollywood. You already know if this is a book you might like. It is exactly what it sounds like — a modern day retelling of a Jane Austen story, that happens to take place in Hollywood. Wanna know more? Ok. This particular re-telling is a version of Sense & Sensibility. Not my favorite Austen, but certainly not my least favorite, either. I was game for an update, […]
