Gin Bianco is an assassin. She won’t shut up about it, in fact

July 31, 2014 by Malin 7 Comments

Gin Blanco is an assassin. She goes under the name The Spider. Her weapon of choice is knives and she’s very good at her job, something she will rarely shut up about, even in times when people are trying to kill her. Gin lives in a world where there are a number of elementals, controlling fire, ice, earth, air, water, stone, even electricity and the like. Gin is a stone elemental and can also control ice. If you forget, she’ll remind you every third chapter […]

Phoebe Sommerville is a bundle of daddy issues and sexual hangups, masquerading as a drop-dead gorgeous blonde bombshell. Clever, sensitive and oh so very vulnerable, Phoebe learned long ago that the best way to keep men at a distance and getting her own way is by pretending to be a sexy airhead. Estranged from her horrible father since she was 18, having done as much as she could to shock him, Phoebe is shocked to realise that even after his death, he is trying to […]

Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins

I really liked this book. It reminded me a lot of Buffy, both in the storyline and in humor. Harper has a lot on her plate, between cotillion, being student body president, and cheerleading. She doesn’t expect to suddenly inherit super ninja powers that she must use to defend her arch nemesis, David. David is an irritating hipster who has been bugging Harper since preschool. The two have to work together to keep David alive, which becomes complicated because he is meant to die on […]

This is a rebooted version of The Great Gatsby set in modern-day Hamptons. Naomi is spending the summer with her mother, who desperately wants to fit in with the super rich vacationers. A mysterious girl moves in next door, a mysterious blogger named Jacinda. Everyone wants to be featured on her fashion blog. Jacinda invites Naomi to a party, hoping she will bring Delilah. Delilah is the it-girl of the Hamptons, and a constant presence on Jacinda’s blog. The two girls share a history and […]

Fire & Flood by Victoria Scott

This book is really sort of goofy. It’s The Hunger Games plus The Amazing Race plus Pokemon. The main character, Tella, gets an invitation to participate in the Brimstone Bleed. It’s a race through four environments. All of the contestants have a loved one who is terribly sick, all of them have the same horrible illness. Whichever contestant wins gets the cure. The competitors are aided in the race by animals that hatched from eggs, animals that have special abilities. In the first book, we […]

Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge

July 30, 2014 by Caitycat Leave a Comment

This story is about two cups of Beauty and the Beast, a dash of Rumpelstiltskin, and a pinch of Bluebeard. The mixture is then blended with a heaping tablespoon of fantasy (I don’t know, there’s this weird touch magic thing). A teenage girl named Nyx is forced to marry a horrible beast. Her future is to kill him, though she will also die in the process. I had some major issues with the main character at times. There are some inexcusable moments of stupidity. Overall, […]
