Another Historical Romance Trilogy, But from a Back Catalogue

September 4, 2014 by Mrs. Julien Leave a Comment

First, thank you, Malin, for the loan of these books. My Julie Anne Long collection was not going to complete itself. These three historical romances are an early trilogy from one of the genre’s best writers. Good, but not great, one can feel Julie Anne Long picking up speed and confidence as one moves through the novels. The heroines of each of the three books are the daughters of a Member of Parliament and his beloved mistress. Although never married, their parents had an exclusive, […]

There will be weirdness

September 4, 2014 by Julia in Austin Leave a Comment

“When something catches your attention just keep your attention on it, stick with it ’til the end, and somewhere along the line there’ll be weirdness.” Yes. There will be weirdness. In Helen Oyeyemi’s Boy, Snow, Bird, a woman named Boy marries into a family of African Americans passing as white. However, Boy doesn’t know this until she gives birth to her baby girl, Bird, who is recognizably (recognizably?) black. But that’s not the weird part. Here’s the thing, there’s no weird part to Boy, Snow, […]

You can probably see where it’s going inside of Six Pages though….

I have never read a Harlan Coben book before. I keep confusing him with Dennis Lehane. Whenever I see anything about Harlan Coben, I always think “oh, yeah, he wrote Mystic River, I really want to read that. Wait. NO HE DIDN’T”. But I loved the French movie they made from his book Tell No-One and the plot for this sounded super intriguing so I thought what the heck. So the titular time period is how long lapses between Jake Sanders watching the love of his life Natalie Avery, marry […]

Another Contemporary Romance, But with a Violation of the Client/Therapist Relationship

September 3, 2014 by Mrs. Julien 5 Comments

Sisters in Love is a facile and trite contemporary romance laden with clichés and complex problems simplistically resolved. A large part of my reaction was, “Maybe I could write a whole book. Melissa Foster did. It’s not like I have to write a good book. Melissa Foster didn’t.” It’s very freeing when one thinks of it that way. The rest of my reaction was to be grateful Sisters in Love was free and to be very pleased when I finished reading it – which I […]

Fire is not a plaything. It bites and claws and tears the flesh. Fire is a beast and it is rather strange that at the same time, it is a bird and an insect too; an insect like a wasp, small and yellow, which leaves a blister when it stings.

Enchanting stories from another world

September 3, 2014 by AamilTheCamel Leave a Comment

Thirty-third book reviewed as part of the 130 Challenge. This one I got from Utkarsha Kotian. It’s a really rare book, but Utkarsha is my go-to person for rare books. So, after having received the book from her, I promptly got down to reading it. That wasn’t so hard considering that there were only 4 storied to read. But each of those stories was really simple and enchanting. Gulzar is a highly accomplished lyricist and scriptwriter and I’ve always wanted to read him. This was my […]

To Infinity and Back – Sci Fi fantasy short story collection by the Earthsea lady. Some of it entertaining, some weird, all thought provoking.

September 3, 2014 by FyreHaar Leave a Comment

My husband picked this book up when he went out to get the Earthsea books (which he still has not read all the way through, I married a heathen). There are copious author’s notes that gave me an insight into LeGuin’s writing. She writes of the “psychomyth” as her main story type which greatly helped me in not trying to understand the stories in a rational sense but to let myself feel what the reading of them engendered. This book was engrossing and each piece […]
