For my first Cannonball Read review of the new year, I read one of my Christmas presents –
My 1st book is The 5th Wave
My first book of the new year was The 5th Wave by Rick Yancy. I had seen a pretty amazing book trailer for the book on the Penguin Young Readers channel on YouTube (check out the trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKkEAIs4pJc), and thought it would be an interesting read. If I had paid closer attention to the trailer, I probably wouldn’t have wanted to read it. My dad was a big Sci-Fi fan, so I grew up with Star Trek, Star Wars, Lost In Space (the original series), […]
Not with a bang, but a whimper.
What would happen if the rotation of the earth slowed? Beyond the physical effects on the earth, what changes would occur socially? How would a young person moving into their teen years deal with both the transition to adulthood and a crumbling society trying to stay afloat? This book came highly recommended but ultimately left me a little cold. I thought it fell short of its full potential. The science fiction geek inside wanted a little more meat to conflict set up regarding earth’s […]
ElCicco #CBR6 Review #1: Jeeves and the Wedding Bells: an Homage to P.G. Wodehouse by Sebastian Faulks
PG Wodehouse fans should be delighted by this novel. Faulks revives our favorite duo, Jeeves and Bertie Wooster, for a fun summertime romp at Lord Henry’s country estate. At stake is the happiness of Bertie Wooster’s friend Woody. His engagement to Lord Henry’s daughter Amelia is in jeopardy due to a combination of misunderstanding and financial crisis. Complicating the situation are Amelia’s beautiful and lively cousin Georgiana and a hilarious plot contrivance that requires Bertie to play the valet Wilberforce to Jeeves’ Lord Etringham. If […]
Fiat.Luxury’s Review #1: The Purity Myth #CBR6
Feminism and modern evangelicalism, and the tension between religion’s “ought” and human reality, are some of my favorite topics (hence my blog) so I was excited to finally pick up The Purity Myth. I expected to find a book that succinctly examined our cultural and subcultural obsession with the virgin-whore dichotomy, the use and misuse of “purity” in modern evangelical and American culture, and the political and personal consequences of our preoccupation with virginity. I was not disappointed. The writing is strong, the argument is convincing, and […]
Popcultureboy’s 1st #CBR6 Review: You Are One Of Them by Elliott Holt
Kicking off CBR6 with a highly engrossing story of two childhood friends, where one becomes an internationally known symbol for peace at the height of the Cold War tensions before tragically dying in a plane crash. Or does she? The book follows her best friend as she tries to find out the truth about what really happened. If you loved The Americans, you’ll love this. Full review is on my blog here.
