“Luck—that was what a man needed to thrive in this universe.  It changed the scale.  A star couldn’t have good luck—a planet couldn’t.  That took something alive and conscious, something like a man.” While exploring the galactic core, the Enterprise finds a lost Federation shuttle with a crazy person inside.  He seems to be a major plot point, but we will soon forget about him completely.  The Enterprise is then steered by an unknown force to a Dyson sphere and taken inside it.  There are […]

Defy – New YA Fantasy with a Twist

January 7, 2014 by HillaryM Leave a Comment

Sara B. Larson’s Defy tells the story of Alex Hollon, the best fighter on the prince’s royal guard. There’s just one catch, however — Alex is actually Alexa; she and her twin brother Marcel lied about her identity so she could join the army after their parents’ death at the hands of an enemy sorcerer. But Alexa’s true identity may not be as well-concealed as she thinks, and she’s not the only one with secrets.

Romance and Tragedy

January 7, 2014 by Rachel S 3 Comments

“What’ll become of us?  All of us?”  “In the end, only one thing.” The Invisible Bridge is a novel about one young man’s journey from adolescence into manhood, on the eve of World War II.  I cannot remember who recommended that I read this book, so I am unable to thank them for the recommendation!  Although, I would have asked why they failed to mention the book’s length, which is over 700 pages. That was probably not the smartest book to start with for a […]

Fiat.Luxury #CBR6 #2: Middlemarch

January 7, 2014 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

I picked up Middlemarch as part of The Toast’s Middlemarch book club, since I somehow had gone 31 years without reading any George Eliot.  So much has already been said about this book that it’s difficult to know where to start with my humble review! I enjoyed this novel immensely.  It’s rare that an author describes so many characters in such loving, realistic, and sometimes harsh detail.  Although I related to some characters more than others, there wasn’t a single one I couldn’t relate to […]

Since I totally blew it in CBR V, I’m going to try to redeem myself this year. I submitted for a half cannonball, and only reviewed 8. 🙁 I WILL SUCCEED!
