I Risked It This Week

January 11, 2014 by Mrs. Taffy 2 Comments

This series grabbed me several years ago when I added the first title in the series, Found, to my library’s collection, so I was super excited when I saw that the sixth installment in The Missing series by Margaret Peterson Haddix was out. I quickly added it to a book order, and, of course, it was the first title from the order I grabbed to read.   Risked begins with Jonah Skidmore and his sister Katherine doing some computer research trying to figure out which of […]

“The brain is a monstrous, beautiful mess.”

January 11, 2014 by Rachel S 1 Comment

This is Susannah Cahalan’s story of how she lost her mind for a month.  Susannah was a normal, healthy mid-twenties woman living in New York City.  She had a great job as a reporter, a wonderful boyfriend, and a network of friends and family.  She was described as outgoing and talkative, and seemed to be the life of the party.  Then one day in 2009, she slowly slipped into a state of paranoia, developed seizures, and could no longer control her movements or thoughts.  She […]

Once upon a looking for Donna time….

January 11, 2014 by popcultureboy Leave a Comment

Oh DONNA! First you blew my mind, then you broke my heart. And now, with only your third novel in 21 years, you have managed to do both. An intriguing plot and a promising start give way to bloated navel gazing for nigh on 800 pages. Full review is on my blog here.

A Story of the Future Set Mostly in the Past

January 9, 2014 by Emmalita 6 Comments

Mistaken assumptions – Victorian literature – house party mysteries – fictional detectives – the timelessness of history – the unreliability of perception – love at first sight – the nature of cats – this conversation has happened before – this conversation will certainly happen again – the indomitable will of a woman on a mission – Ned really needs a vacation. First and foremost, To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis is a fun read.  It is a smart, comedic, time-traveling Sci-fi novel […]
