“Yesterday’s Son”: Star Trek Novelization Vangie13 cbr #24

February 22, 2014 by Vangie13 Leave a Comment

by A.C. Crispin  “I specified clearance for three, Captain.  Taking into account Dr. McCoy’s predictable penchant for rushing in where angels fear to tread, I reasoned he would attempt this.  There is usually a logical pattern to his illogical behavior.”  Remember when Spock and McCoy found themselves transported through time 5,000 years into the past, into the middle of an ice age? And Spock reverted to pre-Surak Vulcanism and ate meat? And had a brief, passionate affair with a woman named Zarabeth? When Spock and […]

“Through a chink too wide there comes in no wonder”

I used to write for Cannonball Read as Funkyfacecat, but as my twitter handle is doombiscuits, I decided to make life simpler and update my ID here as well. A friend of mine had enjoyed the film, so when I saw Wonder Boys available very cheaply in a January sale, I snapped it up, thinking that a disillusioned and satirical take on academia would be fun to read while waiting for the last stage of my own studies to begin. It’s the story of a […]

When you put “five star” in your title, you’re just asking for it

Eurgh. This book underlines perfectly the reasons why all my attempted Booker Prize Longlist reads have failed in the past. It came VERY close to ending my attempt this year, as at around the halfway point, I was so very bored that I nearly threw in the towel. But I persisted, and I finished it, mostly so I could finally complete a fricking Booker Challenge. That’s pretty much the only good thing I can say about it. Apparently, Aw’s previous novels have been described as “mesmerizing,” […]

Enough with the humor. Just tell me the story.

For the past 5 of 6 months, I’ve been juggling two different book clubs. The first one, the one I’ve been in for years, was starting to get on my nerves. Not the people so much as the book choices. They just weren’t for me. I’m not a Twilight Mom and I’m not an Oprah addict, so there wasn’t much there for me. And I found myself a second, more “me” club. But even if I didn’t read the chosen books for the original club, […]

Hello, Clarice

February 20, 2014 by Rachel S Leave a Comment

Last year I decided to read the Hannibal novels after I watched the first season of NBC’s Hannibal.  For those of you who have not seen Hannibal, please watch it.  Don’t let them cancel it on me!  Claire Danes’s husband plays Will Graham, and his crazy face rivals her cry face! And man, these Hannibal Lecter books are FUN.  I highly doubt I need to summarize the plot, but in case you have not been alive for the past twenty-five years, Hannibal Lecter is a convicted serial […]
