“Mutiny on the Enterprise”: Star Trek Novelization Vangie13 cbr #26

February 23, 2014 by Vangie13 Leave a Comment

by Robert E. Vardeman “Zarv’s entire family had been killed by the Romulans in a brief incursion years before.  His hatred for them and all they stood for transcended mere duty; it took on personal overtones.” This is a direct sequel to Mr. Vardeman’s “The Klingon Gambit,” and it is just as wretched, ridiculous, and poorly-written as its predecessor. Even though Enterprise and her crew are in desperate need of repairs and rest after their last mission, they are given a trio of ambassadors and […]

In school, my teacher just read this book to us. Its about a girl named Jayne, who just moved from California to Williamsburg, Virginia. Her parents work for the government and have to move around a lot, which is hard for Jayne. Her parents have to go away for the whole summer, so Jayne goes to live with aunt Liz. Aunt Liz works at a hospital, and she DOESNT believe in ghosts. Jayne meets a real ghost inside Aunt Liz’s house, who was part of […]

It really was quite a game.

Last week, we drove to New York and we listened to the CD of The Westing Game in the car. The Westing Game is about 16 people who are brought together because they are all mentioned as heirs in a very rich businessman’s (Samuel Westing) will. And they can only inherit his fortune of $200,000,000 if they can solve the mystery of his murder. The heirs are paired together and given a set of clues and $10,000 to help them solve the mystery. The clues […]

I lost my original copy with this beautiful cover. Now I have one of the new editions, which is far less charming.

“There is a hole in the world, and the light is running out of it. And the words go with the light.”

After the glory that is The Tombs of Atuan (for me at least), The Farthest Shore comes as – well, “disappointment” isn’t the right word, because I am always thrilled to return to Earthsea. But it’s less of a revelation, perhaps, and doesn’t touch me as deeply as Tenar’s story. Which doesn’t mean that it’s a bad book. Far from it! The Farthest Shore features Ged, now Archmage, in the role of a mentor to young Arren, a prince of Enlad. It has been years […]

Fargo meets Pretty Little Liars

I love this cover, and I would definitely wear that sweater. This is a funny mystery. It’s got a lot of Midwest charm, you betcha. It’s also got a bunch of great characters, especially the main character Kippy. She is trying to solve her best friend’s murder, while meeting resistance from the local sheriff, who believes that Ruth’s boyfriend killed her and refuses to look at any evidence to the contrary. Link to my full review is here.

“Time For Yesterday”: Star Trek Novelization Vangie13 cbr #25

February 23, 2014 by Vangie13 2 Comments

by A.C. Crispin  “I wish that once, just once, I could command a mission where everything goes perfectly.  Everything.  The transporter functions without a hitch, both the warp drive and the impulse engines stay on-line for the duration, nobody from security suffers so much as a hangnail, and the ship’s computer doesn’t even hiccup.”  Since this a sequel to the same author’s “Yesterday’s Son,” I decided to read it out of order.  It’s actually #39 in the Pocketbooks series, while “Yesterday’s Son” is #11.  I […]
