I Hope It Doesn’t Suck

The Lesser Dead by Christopher Buehlman

August 2, 2024 by Jake 1 Comment

Read as part of CBR16 Bingo: smash. This book is a vampire novel, a historical fiction novel, and a mystery novel all rolled into one.  Christopher Buehlman’s Between Two Fires isn’t the kind of book I’d normally read: gonzo fantasy. But it came highly recommended and — in spite of itself — it worked. The imagery was overpowering and the narrative eventually caught up with it near the end. It made sense for the kind of story it was trying to tell: take the apocalyptic overtones of […]

Four Weddings and a Funeral

Husband Material by Alexis Hall

August 2, 2024 by Malin Leave a Comment

CBR16 Bingo: Rings (a whole bunch of rings being exchanged in this book) In Boyfriend Material, Luc and Oliver met, pretended to date for a number of reasons, pretended to be in love, fell in love, broke up, and then decided to actually date for real. By the time this book starts, they have been together for a good while (I want to say at least a year?) and as is often the case at a certain age of your life, they keep being invited […]

There’s Something About Mary

Mary B: A Novel by Katherine J. Chen

August 1, 2024 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr16bingo fanfic  As I have mentioned in previous reviews, I love Pride and Prejudice. It’s one of my favorite novels of all time. I have read and enjoyed several re-tellings of the novel, such as Jo Baker’s Longbourn, Curtis Sittenfeld’s Eligible, and Seth Grahame-Smith’s Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I guess those are “fanfics,” but when I think of fanfic, I think of stories like All the Young Dudes, which use a famous novel as a jump off point to imagine life beyond the original […]

CBR Bingo – Rings. Marriage. Caution: Spoilers. Anna Green and Liam “West” Weston were divorced and went their separate ways after they finished their studies at UCLA. Their sham marriage was just so they could get inexpensive housing on campus. Three years later, Anna finds herself with a fine arts degree, jobless, no prospects to sell her art, and saddled under her dad’s medical bills. She gets a surprise visit from West, the handsome, extremely wealthy heir apparent to the Weston Foods supermarket chain. West […]

A new favorite book that could not fit better into this BINGO square if it tried. CBRBINGO – Bananas

Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell

July 31, 2024 by narfna 2 Comments

This is a ridiculous book that I loved very much. Also, because I have low spoons at the moment and also because I couldn’t do better, here is the blurb: Shesheshen has made a mistake fatal to all monsters: she’s fallen in love. Shesheshen is a shapeshifter, who happily resides as an amorphous lump at the bottom of a ruined manor. When her rest is interrupted by hunters intent on murdering her, she constructs a body from the remains of past meals: a metal chain […]
