What Happens When the Past is Forgotten

The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro

May 16, 2023 by The Chancellor 2 Comments

The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro My rating: 4 of 5 stars I chose this for the CBR15 Passport Challenge in the “Travel Your Bookshelf” category. The first time I read Buried Giant, it was going to be a 3 star rating the ending saved it for me. That moment on the shore with Axl and Beatrice gets me in the feels. It’s such sharp, intense writing that leaves a strong impression on a reader. That deserves recognition. Originally, I thought the plot didn’t have much […]

Jennifer Hale should narrate more audiobooks

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars by Christopher Paolini

May 13, 2023 by Malin 1 Comment

#CBR15 Passport Challenge – Different genres (Sci-fi) 15-word review: Kira touches the wrong alien artifact and things escalate wildly from there. Excellent audio book. The audio book, which even listening at x1.5 speed felt like it lasted approximately forever, is narrated by Jennifer Hale and she does an amazing job. I was surprised to see, that with the exception of this and the upcoming follow-up (the book is set in the same universe, not sure if it’s a sequel, prequel, or companion novel), she has […]

A Subject With Many Facets

The Song of the Cell: An Exploration of Medicine and the New Human by Siddhartha Mukherjee

May 7, 2023 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

Damn, sometimes you come across an author who’s skills you envy so much it hurts. Siddhartha Mukherjee is absolutely one of these authors. I wish I could communicate the intracies of biology in the way Mukherjee does, while keeping it both interesting and easy to digest. I sometimes struggle to do this in person, but in writing? It’s a daunting task.  Both of Mukherjee’s previous books— The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer; and The Gene: An Intimate History—are both excellent books that […]

The Title Says it All

I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

May 7, 2023 by LittlePlat 2 Comments

God damn, Jennette McCurdy picked one startling title. I’m not entirely out of tune with pop culture or the long arm of Nickolodian, so I’m aware of  both iCarly and Sam and Cat, even if I was too old to be the target audiance for either of these shows. But like everyone else who is not completely detached from pop culture, I am not blind to the issues that are running rampart in the industry concerning young kids. But for what little protection a child […]

“We’ll drag this country into fairness and justice”

Witchmark by C.L. Polk

Stormsong by C.L. Polk

Soulstar by C.L. Polk

May 7, 2023 by LittlePlat 2 Comments

Long time, no reviews. Time to tackle the backlog! I came about this series in a very arse backwards manner. I was given a copy of the book Soulstar sometime last year and I got about a quarter of the way through before I gave into the feeling that something wasn’t right… The funny thing about ebooks is that looking for the blurb is not as simple as with a hardback. So I had missed it—and because of that, also missed the fact that […]

Family secrets and a ghost story

Black Water Sister by Zen Cho

May 1, 2023 by persnickety chick 1 Comment

I do love the tagline- She was trouble, so is her ghost. First book of the year (well first review), first CBR Passport book (book about another country).  This was a book that i suggested for my IRL book club (because i already owned it), so the review considers their responses as well. While I have owned “Sorcerer to the Crown” for a number of years I have never quite gotten into it and it took reading a book of short stories by Zen Cho […]
