A genius scientist and her evil nemesis some aliens, a talking goat and a toilet weasel

Billie Blaster and the Robot Army from Outer Space  by Laini Taylor

July 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo On the air:  Spaceship in space because a signal from an old robot friend is sent back to Earth that starts Billie’s adventures  Billie Blaster and the Robot Army from Outer Space  is a good solid 3.5 rating. It was not “OMG Best book ever!” but I enjoyed it. The humor is typical kid, there is a message (though maybe slightly glossed over), and there is a fun premise (though I really really wish there was a particular room on the spaceship….) Overall, ages […]

Incredible world-building does not make up for a lackluster romance

Before We Disappear by Shaun David Hutchinson

July 4, 2023 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

“I think it must’ve been a person who’d wished for love but had never known it who’d created the first clock. Because time is a reminder of how quickly the present passes and how little of the future remains, and no one in love would want to know that.” ― Shaun David Hutchinson, Before We Disappear After narrowly escaping Paris when his employer/adoptive mother is accused of stealing a rival’s illusion, Jack finds himself in Seattle the month before the 1909 Alaska–Yukon–Pacific Exposition. While there, […]

CBR15 Bingo: Bodies Bodies

Three Little Words by Jenny Holiday

July 4, 2023 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars CBR15 Bingo: Bodies Bodies (self-esteem issues, eating disorder) 15-word review: International supermodel Gia has an eating disorder, but eats when restaurant owner Bennet feeds her. Longer review: Gia Gallo is used to travelling in her job as a globe-trotting fashion model. Recently, she struggles with the fact that she doesn’t fit into the teeny tiny sizes of the clothes she’s supposed to model, and she’s not really sure if she’s not outgrown the whole industry, both in body size and motivation-wise. Having never […]

Our house is a very fine… okay it is a piece of crap but it’s where we lay our heads, along side the rats

UTown by Cab

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo Dwelling the building  they live in is being torn down as their neighborhood is being hit by gentrification  Will a slacker stay a slacker or is there more for him? Dreary images show the seedy, dark side of things in UTown. CABs (Caroline Breault) story is realistic, gritty, raw, and maybe a bit too relatable. There are mature themes, language, and content. A true literary graphic novel that is not for everyone, but maybe everyone should read. The book report portion of this review for UTown is […]

Sparkle Dragons are a blast(ish)

The Sparkle Dragons (The Sparkle Dragons, 1) by Emma Carlson Berne

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo Strange Worlds doesn’t get more strange than Trolls making smoothies  I was not the audience for the book, The Sparkle Dragons (The Sparkle Dragons, 1). However, I know a lot of girls ages six to about nine who will love the pretty dragons, the bratty princess, and the (probably) evil unicorn (okay he is SO the evil genius of the book). The story is both typical (magic and adventures) and modern (dealing with an environmental issue and civil rights). The illustrations were minimal colors (mostly […]

July 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo sex: how sex and gender are two things, but also how that plays a role in relationships, especially as we age and learn more about ourselves.  An intense, mature subject matter exploration of one person’s journey into what it means to be intersexed and transgender is shown on the pages of At 30, I Realized I Had No Gender: Life Lessons From a 50-Year-Old After Two Decades of Self-Discovery. Shou Arai gives us the ins and outs of sex, presentation and so much more.
