CBRBINGO – POLITICS: A cinnamon roll vampire love interest, and some great fantasy worldbuilding.

Blood Mercy (Blood Grace, #1) by Vela Roth

October 23, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

I really, really liked this. A slow burn fantasy romance where the fantasy is incredibly detailed and satisfying. We’re living the dream! Blood Mercy is the first book in a self-published fantasy romance series. Cassia is our main character, and she is the bastard daughter of a king (a terrible, tyrannical, cruel king). She normally tries to stay away from court in order to stay away from her father, but a once in a lifetime event is about to occur and she needs to be […]

Where are my footnotes?

Freakonomics by Steven Levitt, Stephen Dubner

October 22, 2023 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 25: On the air I first heard of Freakonomics as an NPR show; I think the radio (aka air-waves) form fits this concept better than the written. Firstly, every chapter in the book opens with some reference to the brilliance of the economist author (the other author is a journalist); granted Steven Levitt does seem pretty unconventional as an economist and I do think his novel approach leads to really interesting insights. However, the repeated reminders of his brilliance start to get irritating. The […]

A little poetry, a little violence

The Painter by Peter Heller

October 20, 2023 by Sophia Leave a Comment

CBR15Bingo: “You are here” The Painter (2015) by Peter Heller is one of the books I specifically searched out for Cannonball Bingo. Looking for local books, I was doing google searches for the “best books that take place in Colorado” and saw The Painter. I had read The Dog Stars by Heller ten years ago and was impressed, so I was open to reading another book by him. In addition, Heller lives in Denver and the book takes place (at least partly) in the mountains of Colorado, which works perfectly […]

Very Tired Pawns

Cruel Seduction by Katee Robert

October 17, 2023 by Pooja 4 Comments

CBR 15 Bingo- Getaway: Not that I mind thinking about South America, but I simply don’t have any book coming up that’s related to it, and I want to black out my bingo board! I supposed Katee Robert’s work is pretty escapist too. Eris must wed Theseus, who made his way into the Thirteen through murder, to keep a closer eye on him. To irk him she takes up with his best friend Pandora; to irk her he takes up with her ex-boyfriend Adonis. But […]
