Toxic Friendships That Lead to Murder

The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley

July 28, 2022 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Snakes The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley was the December 2021 Mocha Girls Read book club selection. The theme was “snow on the cover”. I’ve heard a bunch of hype around this book. I am also a sucker for a cozy mystery or a thriller tv show. So I was more than a little intrigued. Everyone is a suspect so this works rather nicely for the “Snakes” square. We meet a group of friends who went to Oxford together and are stuck in […]

The Tyrant Alpha's Rejected Mate

Compulsively readable take on fated mates

The Tyrant Alpha's Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells

CBR14Bingo – Rec’d: Rec’d by a friend who had to convince me that, no, it was not actually as bad as the title sounded (and y’all know the stuff I’ve read) I don’t like bully romances and my track record with the fated mates trope is spotty at best. But after hearing a few trusted friends raving about this book, I gave it a try, and wow, am I glad I did. After assuming control of the Quarry Pack at a young age, Killian has […]

“Even in his final moments, I doubt he learned his lesson. But I didn’t kill him to teach him a lesson; I killed him to carve him out of this world like a tumor. And I’d do it again.” #CBRBINGO – Gaslight

They Never Learn by Layne Fargo

July 28, 2022 by narfna 12 Comments

It takes a lot for a thriller to get five stars from me, but this book fully earns it. I’m fairly certain that unless I have an exceptionally stellar rest of the year, this book will be making it into my top ten books of the year, maybe even my top five. I have made nearly all of my IRL friends read it, so now I want everyone who I have only met virtually to read it, too. It gave me joy. I do not […]

More Memoir-Manifestos, please!

All Boys Aren't Blue by George Matthew Johnson

July 28, 2022 by booktrovert 4 Comments

CBR Bingo – Bodies, because this book is all about how the author came to accept his identity – his life in his queer, Black body – it’s a letter of acceptance for everyone who might need it, which includes all of us. I loved this memoir – this vulnerable, beating heart of a book – which explores the life of a young, queer Black man growing up in New Jersey. Johnson describes how he came to accept himself even as he struggles with two […]

CBR Bingo – Snake, thanks to Officer Cruise and others like him that cannot understand their fear is not more important than the lives they take 16 year old Starr Carter is a master at code-switching. Growing up in Garden Heights, she is used to her community being full of lively characters full of love who look out for one another amidst gun shots and drug deals. When she is at home, she feels slightly isolated from this community, who sees her as an outsider […]

A tale of war with no heroes

Bolla: A Novel by Pajtim Statovci

July 28, 2022 by ElCicco 1 Comment

Cbr14bingo Serpent I found this book while on vacation at the beach. Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach Delaware, is a wonderful independent bookstore and I highly recommend a visit if you find yourself in the area. Their “staff picks” section is large and always yields some interesting reads I might not otherwise have found, including this book. Naturally, I went in looking for books to help fill bingo squares and the winged serpent on the cover grabbed my attention. This is an incredible novel but […]
