I Just Can’t Quit This Series

Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith

September 5, 2022 by Wanderlustful 3 Comments

I know, I know, I KNOW. My once-beloved J.K. Rowling, writing here under her pseudonym Robert Galbraith, has fallen off the deep end, writing some despicable things about transgender people. Sigh. Does it make it better that I didn’t buy this, just borrowed it from the library? I’m still not sure, and I’m not sure about where the line is between art/the artist, especially with a book like this one where a cross-dressing villain is featured… Because I don’t have any great answers, or new […]

Hannah is a newly married thirty-something year old, still smitten with her husband Owen, and largely loving their life in the Sam Francisco Bay Area. They live on a houseboat in Sausalito and she spends her days making hand turned custom wooden furniture while Owen works for an up and coming tech start up in the city where he is the right hand to the CEO. The only friction is between Hannah and Bailey, Owen’s daughter from a previous marriage, who has yet to warm […]

Insightful and hilarious

Cult Classic by Sloane Crosley

September 5, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Minds, as this was a comedic thriller full of mind games (and a possible cult). If you’re looking for something incredibly fun and intensely readable, look no further. I loved this brief ride of a book. I don’t know how I’ve managed to avoid Crosley’s writing until this point, but I plan to add more of her writing to my TBR pile. The premise itself is rather thin – a woman (Lola) meets up with former colleagues for dinner in Chinatown. […]

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty

You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty by Akwaeke Emezi

September 4, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – hot. This book is rather steamy, and you will be inundated with descriptions of the incredible hotness of nearly every character. This book is about grief, and owning your own body and will and exercising those in a way that truly embraces life. But it is ALSO a book about incredibly beautiful, talented people with lots of money lusting after one another in locations so beautiful they belong on the cover of Architectural Digest magazine. It’s a romance novel with some taboo […]

Muscles & Monsters

A cupcake with its frosting to cake ratio way off

Muscles & Monsters by Ashley Bennett

September 4, 2022 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

CBR14Bingo – Dough: Technically it’s batter and not dough, but Tegan’s a baker. Also, I got this book from Kindle Unlimited, so I technically spent no dough on it! This is like one of those cupcakes that looks absolutely gorgeous but the frosting to cake ratio is way off. The cover is adorable, the premise is cute, but there wasn’t quite enough substance there for me. After Tegan fumbles a wedding cake and Atlas comes to her rescue, she’s fascinated by the muscly wolven (basically […]

“ But I didn’t kill him to teach him a lesson; I killed him to carve him out of this world like a tumor. And I’d do it again.”

They Never Learn by Layne Fargo

September 4, 2022 by esmemoria 3 Comments

CBR Bingo: Cold Trigger warning: sexual assualt, mild spoilers Layne Fargo’s They Never Learn is the story of a feminist killer. Dr. Scarlett Clark, professor of English, targets all manner of deserving male victims: rapists, predators, abusers. The story opens on her staging the suicide of a young college football player who participated in the gang rape of a fellow student. She adds strychnine to his energy drink, an incredibly painful way to go. Scarlett is an ice cold killer in execution, but driven by […]
