“to each was given days and chances which wouldn’t come back around”

Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan

September 17, 2022 by tiny_bookbot Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Cold Well, the semester started, and away with it went my brain, or at least the part of it I use for writing. Still! I’ve been reading! So time to eke out a review or two before I crumble. Claire Keegan’s Small Things Like These came to my attention along with Audrey Magee’s The Colony when it was long listed for the Booker Prize. Magee didn’t make the shortlist, but Keegan did, and Small Things Like These has the honor of being the shortest novel to ever […]

A Taste of Gold and Iron

“I’m getting paid in chaos.”

A Taste of Gold and Iron by Alexandra Rowland

September 17, 2022 by llamareadsbooks 5 Comments

CBR14Bingo: Scandal – The initial events that lead Kadou and Evemer together are a result of trying to fix a scandal caused by Kadou’s last guard This is a near-perfect enemies-to-lovers bodyguard romance set in an Ottoman-inspired setting. There are misconceptions! Political intrigue! Random swordfights! It’s just lovely and I absolutely devoured this book. After his sister the empress safely delivered her daughter, Kadou should be relieved. Instead, high tempers and a misunderstanding lead to a deadly end, and Kadou feels like it’s all his […]

Housewives, They Are Desperate…

One of Us is Dead by Jeneva Rose

September 17, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR14 Bingo: recommended. This book was recommended by author May Cobb, whose “My Summer Darlings” is one of the best things I read this year. I was looking for a female-focused thriller with a similar lack of inhibition.  Ok, right off the bat, this book is bonkers. If you looking at the premise and expecting any degree of verisimilitude, give this a hard pass. But it’s the willingness to lean into its bonkers-ness (?), to go over the top and just […]

Family Chaos

The Family Chao by Lan Samantha Chang

September 17, 2022 by booktrovert Leave a Comment

Bingo square – dough – for the cooking elements AND for the significant impact of money on the family and the story generally Also, another BINGO! Every time I read the family name in its plural form, I had to mentally pronounce it, because my mind kept wanting to state “chaos”, rather than the “chow” (fun fact – the parts of our brain involved in auditory processing are full cylinder firing and critically important to reading, even SILENT reading, which is why phonics instruction is […]

Easy Does It

Just One Look by Lindsay Cameron

September 16, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read this as part of CBR14 Bingo: Minds. The main character plays mind games as a stalker. She also matches her mind against someone else in a game of corporate espionage.  After reading consecutive stinkers from two of my favorite writers (Charles Willeford and Stephen King), it was refreshing to dive into this entertaining thriller from a new name. I was searching for something corporate-y at the bookstore the other day and I came upon this one randomly after finding the authors name on a list of financial thrillers. […]

down to the wire (as always) – BOOK CLUB TIME!

All Boys Aren't Blue by George M. Johnson

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

September 16, 2022 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Why did I wait so long to read these two? This isn’t just a question of Book Club procrastination; this is a “what was I thinking?” moment! I had heard good things about both, I was enraged as ever when they (and others) showed up on lists of challenged and banned books, and they were both available on scribd! Also- why did I treat these books like homework? “oh man, I have to read these before I can move on to other things”- at the […]
