Saxon sisters in post-Roman Britain

Dark Earth by Rebecca Stott

October 13, 2022 by tiny_bookbot 2 Comments

CBR Bingo: Question Most historical fiction set in England involves a few specific historical time periods: the high/late medieval era (think Chaucer or Thomas Malory), the Elizabethan era, the Victorian era, WWI and WWII. But the early medieval period (the time we once might’ve been used to calling “the Dark Ages”) is less popular, though there have been standout novels set in the era (Ishiguro’s The Buried Giant, Rosemary Sutcliffe’s novels such as Sword of Sunset, Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles). This period of flux following the Roman withdrawal from […]

New York Dead by Stuart Woods

October 13, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR14 Bingo: funky. This one is tough. I picked this for “funky” because Woods is descriptive of the fetid scents of Manhattan air. There’s also some funky stuff that happens later in the book, which I won’t spoil. I was able to be clever with my other choices but am tapping out with this one. I’m always on the look out for fun New York tales, especially ones set in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Despite the bad reviews, I was tempted […]

“To die like the skylark”

The Slain Birds by Michael Longley

October 13, 2022 by tiny_bookbot Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo: Bird I joked a couple years ago that the best day is Wake Forest Press Book Club Day, in part because you never know when it’s going to happen. Wake Forest Press focuses on publishing Irish poetry, particularly the Irish poets who aren’t, say, Seamus Heaney or Eavan Boland and claimed by a Big Five publisher. Because it’s a small operation, books come out a bit irregularly and also during the pandemic, shipments were sometimes oddly spaced (I once got three volumes all […]

CBR14 Bingo – Week 13 Check-in

October 13, 2022 by Emmalita 5 Comments

Welcome to the Week 13 CBR 14 Bingo Check-in! You can see the card and the rules on the kick-off post. This week’s mood: Chonky bears and salmon. Congratulations to 747, winner of this year’s Fat Bear Week. I also had salmon for dinner, though not nearly as much and sadly, I don’t have the option of hibernating for several months. Not so much Sunshine-Grumpy as Sunshine-Sad

Her Unexpected Roommate by Jackie Lau

October 13, 2022 by Malin 4 Comments

CBR14 Bingo: Elephant (the elephant in the room very much being Rose’s depression) CW: mental illness, death of a parent from suicide (in the past) Disclaimer! This was an ARC from the author. My opinions are my own. Rose has treatment-resistant depression but nevertheless manages her job as an electrical engineer with the support of her therapist, her friends, and her collection of plush animals. Having watched all of her friends couple up, she’s feeling rather lonely and sad, but rather than stay home and […]

Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America by Maggie Haberman

October 12, 2022 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read this as part of cbr14bingo: time. Maggie Haberman connects Donald Trump’s presidency to his upbringing, rise, fall, and rebirth in New York City. By covering one aspect of time, we learn how the city and the country made the man…and how he would eventually remake the country. An aside: The cover art is from The Washington Post’s review of Haberman’s book. I loved it, though I’m out of free articles and have no idea who to credit with it. Ever since his presidency mercifully ended, I’ve had a […]
