“Never say you know the last word about any human heart”

Sleep No More: Six Murderous Tales by P.D. James

July 15, 2021 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo 13 – Libations The version of P.D. James’s Sleep No More: Six Murderous Tales I read has chocolates in tidy rows on the cover. Needless too say, they are used to murderous effect. Years ago, a colleague of mine told me he had met P.D. James at a reading. He said she was very regal and went into detail about how she comported herself. This came to mind as I read Sleep No More. She sounded like a character in one of her […]

The book Fugitive Telemetry is standing next to two wind up robot toys.

“Possibly I should just stop complaining like a human and get on with it.”

Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells

CBR 13 Bingo: Machinery Fugitive Telemetry fills the gap between the ending of the fourth Murderbot novella, Exit Strategy, and the follow up full length novel Network Effect.  As such it helps bridge Murderbot’s development, from the uncertainty of suddenly becoming a free individual to the more confident, and comfortable in their role, Murderbot of Network Effect.  Physically size wise, Fugitive Telemetry is on par with the other novellas, however, it felt more like a short story to me.  Perhaps that has to do with the action […]

Nancy Drew: Girl Detective, White Whale

The Secret of the Old Clock: Nancy Drew Mystery #1 by Carolyn Keene, Mildred Benson

July 14, 2021 by ElCicco 2 Comments

Cbr13bingo White Whale I somehow managed to make it into my 6th decade having never read a single Nancy Drew book. I have always been somewhat ashamed of this given how great an impact Nancy Drew novels have had on so many women. It’s even more shocking and shameful when I recall that growing up, there were dozens of the Nancy Drew novels in my bedroom closet!! My sister read them all, and I’m pretty sure my mom and aunts had read them when they […]

Stuart Turton is an imaginative little turd. I might be a fan for life. #CBRBINGO – Reader’s Choice

The Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton

July 14, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

**30 Books in 30 Days** Book 28/30 This was one of the last books I read in my thirty day book binge, and I think it says something about how good it was that even though I had some book fatigue going on, I happily and quickly finished this in less than two days. It’s not a huge book, but it’s not small, either. Like Turton’s first book, this is a mystery at heart, and also like his first book, there are some complicating factors […]

“What yesterday was sure footing is now unstable ground.”

Doggerland by Ben Smith

July 14, 2021 by blauracke 1 Comment

On an off-shore windfarm in the North Sea, the Boy, who no longer is a boy, and the Old Man, who already worked with the Boy’s father before he disappeared, are tasked with the upkeep of the wind turbines while living on a maintenance rig. Their relationship is plagued by mistrust and resentment, but they need each other desperately; the work is not only dull and repetitive, but ultimately futile as the turbines are slowly corroding more and more, land has become a foreign concept […]
