End Zone – Done Delillo (1972)

End Zone by Don Delillo

July 24, 2021 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

CBR13Bingo – Sports Ball Probably the sneakiest anti-Vietnam book I’ve ever read, and this includes Norman Mailer’s pretty sneaky anti-Vietnam book “Why are we in Vietnam?” If you look up American literature during the Civil War, there’s not much there. Sure, Melville and Whitman wrote some war poetry, there’s still a lot of journalism, some essays and poetry, and while the Civil War becomes the focal point of American literature for about a century after, nothing stands out as too connected to the war years. […]

The Complete Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S Grant – Ulysses S Grant (1885)

The Complete Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S Grant by Ulysses S Grant

July 24, 2021 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

CBR13Bingo – Rec’d (https://everyday-offershub.com/2020/12/personal-memoirs-and-the-autobiography-of-benjamin-franklin-thewheelbarrow/) There’s a few reasons why this is probably the pinnacle of presidential memoirs. For one, Grant is the second most important military commander in US history (arguably the first but regardless). Two, his prose is pretty straight-forward, readable, and succinct. Three, he spends a lot of time citing sources, debunking myths (often in gracious and conciliatory ways, usually elevating someone’s else status or lauding or defending them — both friend and enemy). Four, he more or less only covers the war. […]

As They Say, a Rollicking Adventure

The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

July 24, 2021 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo – Old Series The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch is the first book in the Gentleman Bastards series, first written in 2006. I did not find it an easy read at first. Not because it isn’t well written. Lynch writes with great detail and imagination. Initially the book covers the escapades of the thieving Gentleman Bastards, rather than character studies or relationships. The shenanigans are great fun and cleverly crafted, but the characterization was a bit thin. The first half of […]

House hunting and Lessons in Leadership for Vampires

Out of House and Home by Drew Hayes

July 24, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 7: Home This one was just kind of fortuitous; I wanted to read Fred the Vampire Accountant #7 which has just recently been published, and it just so happened to be perfect for this square, being titled Out of House and Home. It’s not just the title either, the book is actually about losing and finding both literal and metaphorical home. The book opens a little while after the final events of book 6 (a wedding); Fred and company are getting back to their […]

More H-Mart, Less Crying

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

July 24, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 6: Libations I’m reasonably sure I heard about Crying in H-Mart during an NPR interview with the author. It sounded pretty interesting and food-focused. Then after picking it up, with the red cover with a picture of noodles between chopsticks, I read the first essay, and then actually went to the nearest H-Mart (about an hour away as it turned out). The author’s H-Mart is quite different. I’m not complaining about that, but it does get to the incredibly personal nature of the book; […]

If there’s a library in the title and on the cover, shouldn’t it be part of the story?

The Library of the Dead by T. L. Huchu

July 24, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 5: Cityscape The Library of the Dead features the city of Edinburgh on the cover, both above and below ground. It has a pretty interesting premise: 14 year-old Ropa is a ghostalker, meaning she is a licensed professional who takes messages back and forth between the dead and the living. She’s dropped out of school to work full time to support her family, her grandmother and little sister. She’s got rather rough past, but she does have a few friends. One of them introduces […]
