There was no other way I could go with the Self Care BINGO square than by reviewing a fanfic. #CBRBINGO – Self Care

Dan Westchester, Hello Kitty Enthusiast by violue

Link to the story on AO3: Dan Westchester, Hello Kitty Enthusiast Firstly, if you are not familiar with fanfic (which I hope is not many of you, because it is a true pleasure to indulge in) many fics have individual titles but are part of a series that also has a title. I’ve used the series title for this one, Dan Westchester, Hello Kitty Enthusiast, because it makes me laugh, and because I honestly think it’s a better title than part one of the fic, […]

Making Friends V01 by Kristen Gudsnuk

August 4, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr13bingo Shelfie (granted, not my shelf, but it is on a shelf at a place I call mine.) If making friends was as easy as it was in Making Friends V01 by Kristen Gudsnuk, most of us would never have to be friendless again. Of course, one would have to have some mad skills in drawing to make sure stick figures were not wandering around. Which our main character, Dany, has. Maybe just a little too good! How do you make a friend? For Dany […]

Please note you have seen this author before, just under different names. But know that they still love their minions who read their novels.

Into the Real by Z Brewer

August 4, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr13bingo They/She/He Into the Real fits the They/She/He category on at least two levels. First, Z Brewer goes by they/them. They have had a journey of self-discovery since their Vladimir Todd series days to this most recent novel. (I am currently reading another book by them that came before this with another name).  And due to the main character, Quinn, taking a journeying to find their own gender identity, eventually learning the word genderqueer, also allows it to fit this category. When Quinn finds themselves bouncing […]

I need cute kittens, bunny, ice cream and my fuzzy blanket after reading this manga graphic novel!

Beast Complex Volume One by Paru Itagaki

August 4, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr13bingo Cityscape What a freaking, fracked up, screwed up ride! (only I didn’t say freaking or fracked). I picked this as the Cityscape block as you see the dirty city behind the camel and wolf on the cover. And the stories are set in this same city and in a boarding school within that city. The cover story is the reason I give this book a 3 and not 4 as I was planning after the first few stories. That story made me want to […]

A Promised Land

So much careful reflection, such a treat :)

A Promised Land by Barack Obama

August 4, 2021 by postcardsandbooks 2 Comments

So I warn you that this review will have an extremely liberal internationalist bias, and I don’t want to create unnecessary drama, which politics will inevitably do sometimes. So feel free to skip this review if you don’t want to read about this. We’re all book lovers, let’s be civil 🙂 I’m not sure if I have mentioned this before, but most days I drive to work with a friend, and we always listen to an audiobook 🙂 And because this is a long book […]

Still Not Sure How to Feel About This One

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

August 4, 2021 by Ellesfena 4 Comments

Bingo category: Rec’d (by Mobius Walker) The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires isn’t exactly what I thought it was, based on the title. I was picturing a silly piece of fluff, full of ridiculous Southern sayings, mint juleps, genteel, condescending white women in Lilly Pulitzer dabbing their foreheads with handkerchiefs and gossiping in between killing vampires. A sort of vampire cozy. To Grady Hendrix’s credit, he wrote something much more substantial than that. It’s completely bizarre and definitely has some issues, but it […]
