“You ladies read a strange assortment of books,” James Harris said. “We’re a strange assortment of broads,” Kitty replied.”

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

In one word: Disappointing Cannonball Read Bingo: Libations Alright y’all. I am here with a story of heartbreak. I absolutely ADORED Grady Hendrix’s 2016 “My Best Friend’s Exorcism.” I judged it by its cover immediately as it was styled to look like an old VHS tape, so I was sold from jump. Set in the 80s, it was a seamless blend of horror, humor, and coming of age, a book that I fell into completely and had on my best of the year list. I […]

The Dream Chooses the Dreamer

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

August 22, 2021 by Ellesfena Leave a Comment

CBR Bingo square: Mythic (in the universe of this book the city of Weep is a mythical place inhabited by gods, that no one is sure really exists) I adored the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy and have read it multiple times, but for some reason I was always hesitant to read Strange the Dreamer, I think because I didn’t really think Laini Taylor could write another series that would be as gripping and original as that trilogy. Obviously, I was incorrect. Lazlo Strange has grown up […]

Messy Lives Stay Messy on Holiday

The Feast by Margaret Kennedy

August 22, 2021 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

BINGO: Travel Best for: Fans of Liane Moriarty-style books. In a nutshell: In 1947 in Cornwall, England, a very small hotel has welcomed a variety of guests for the week. At the start, we learn that a cliff-side collapse has completely destroyed the hotel, burying and killing at least some of the guests. We then return to the start of the week to learn about the guests themselves, ultimately discovering who has survived. Worth quoting: “You don’t want to face facts.” “Not in story books, […]

Another story I didn’t know existed, a perfect author for the Gateway square

A Good Heretic (Wayfarers #0.5) by Becky Chambers

August 22, 2021 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

There are a handful of authors that I am simply delighted Cannonball Read has put on my reading radar. Becky Chambers is absolutely one of those. Her The Wayfarers series helped to cement for me my enjoyment of space based science fiction, while simultaneously reaffirming that one doesn’t need to rely on the hero’s journey in order to write excellent genre fiction. My favorite genre books are all character driven, and that is just the kind of exploration and survival stories at which Chambers excels. […]

The Godstone

“Be sure you’re ready. We only have to save the world.”

The Godstone by Violette Malan

CBR13Bingo: Travel – Travel is actually a big part of developing each Practitioner’s magic, and there’s lots of it in the plot An epic fantasy with an artifact with world-ending ramifications sounds right up my alley.. except this didn’t quite work out for me. “I am thinking how much I could have learned from you over the years of our acquaintance if I had known who and what you were.” He went still as a statue for a long moment before answering. “You might have learned […]

A Self-Care Treat for Me

The Sense and Sensibility Screenplay & Diaries: Bringing Jane Austen's novel to film by Emma Thompson

August 21, 2021 by faintingviolet 4 Comments

The 1995 movie adaptation of Sense and Sensibility is maybe my favorite movie adaptation ever and is certainly in my top five movies of all time. I will watch it when I’m happy, when I’m sad, when I’m wistful, when I’m tired. It makes my heart happy and is one of my go to tools in the self-care toolbox. While I have read many Austen related books in my time with Cannonball I had never poked around into books about the movie adaptations. Then in […]
