Solid entry in the Tempe Brennan series

Fatal Voyage by Kathy Reichs

October 28, 2021 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Up in the mountains of North Carolina, where the last towns nestle into the Appalachian wilderness, a commercial airliner crashes. Kathy Reichs’ long time heroine, forensic pathologist Temperance ‘Tempe’ Brennan, is called in to assist with identifying remains. As the police try to determine the source of the crash, Tempe uncovers a foot that doesn’t appear to belong to anyone on the flight manifest- leading her to a whole different investigation. Rounding out the mystery with some love story tension is the appearance on the […]

A Swedish Forrest Gump

The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out a Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson

October 27, 2021 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Allan Karlsson is about to turn 100 years old and he is bored. He’s stuck in a nursing home which has a bunch of very annoying rules and not nearly the excitement he has become accustomed to. With very little in the way of plans, but considerable luck- and true to the book’s title- Karlsson climbs out of the window and into an adventure. The events snowball from there to include theft, inadvertent murder, car crashes, an escaped elephant and a love story- and that’s […]

“As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure.”

All Systems Red by Martha Wells

October 27, 2021 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

CBR13Bingo: Book Club (local library genre book club) Look, I love Murderbot so deeply that it is very hard for me to explain why without just devolving into a squeeing mess. When my local library’s genre book club picked this as its monthly selection, I was overjoyed, but a bit wary of how the, uh, older and more critical members would take it. But I vastly underestimated Murderbot’s appeal! “As a heartless killing machine, I was a terrible failure.” It’s just another routine contract for Murderbot, until […]

Triple Cannonballing with Annie Wilkes. #CBRBINGO – Gateway

Misery by Stephen King

October 27, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

There is some dated language and imagery in here that I don’t think King would use now (his modern books don’t ping anything for me) and that I don’t think I noticed last time, but overall this book is still great. This is the only Stephen King book (so far) that I’ve re-read. Eventually, once I finish up all his extant work (which could take me a while!) I will do a chronological re-read of all his books. That will be a project, for sure. […]

Airframe by Michael Crichton

October 27, 2021 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is the epitome of a three star read. I liked it overall, but it was very dated, and has that signature Crichton lack of character development in favor of extreme technical detail. About 200 pages from the end, though, the tension really picked up, and I did end up enjoying it. This is essentially a book about the aftermath of an airplane disaster in which there are fifty-six casualties, and three deaths. The incident comes at a very bad time for Norton Aircraft, who […]

A wondrously weird book. #CBRBINGO – Free!

Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki

October 27, 2021 by narfna 2 Comments

Thanks to Tor/Forge for the eARC! It has not affected the content of my review. This book was so very weird and so very lovely. I very much enjoyed it. I’ve been dragging my feet on this review but it’s pub day* so I need to buckle down. This is one of those cases where the description really doesn’t do the book justice, and also it very much will not be everyone’s cup of tea, because it resists classification, and takes three very good ideas […]
