Nostalgic favorite brought lovingly into a new format

Kristy's Great Idea: The Baby-Sitters Club by Raina Telgemeier, based on Ann M. Martin's novel

January 8, 2021 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

My youngest, 9, does not care to read chapter books and so she isn’t interested in reading the same things her older sister did at the same age.  However, she loves reading in comic form, be it manga, comics, or graphic novels.  So the challenge is to find her new reading material.  She loves Raina Telgemeier so I decided to take a chance on Raina’s graphic novel adaptation of Ann M. Martin’s Kristy’s Great Idea, book one of The Baby-Sitters Club series.  I was a […]

The only way to learn is to live.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

January 7, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

The barrage of fake perfection on social media these days can easily toss a big old regret salad and serve it up. The rabbit hole of “friends,” spotless kitchens, fancy sounding job titles and instagram-able artisanal birthday parties for toddlers is bottomless. I think everyone wonders, from time to time, how their life would have turned out if they had taken a different fork in the road. Would that job, relationship, or overseas trip fundamentally change everything? Nora Sneed is done with living. Thinking, at […]

Charming picture book about a night time library for animals

The Midnight Library by Kazuno Kohara

January 6, 2021 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

My mom is continually sending our family books, despite my insistence our bookshelves are overflowing!  For Christmas she sent The Midnight Library and though it is aimed at children younger than my own, she knew what she was doing because the 13 and 9 year old were both charmed by the story. The Midnight Library is a love letter to librarians, libraries, and the purpose they serve in the community.  The titular library opens at midnight and closes at dawn.  It is run by a little […]

So much fun. So fucked up. Can I say that?

The Mad and the Bad by Jean-Patrick Manchette

January 5, 2021 by chatelaine9 3 Comments

First of all I have to cop to cheating on this. Kind of. The beginning of this review is maybe 2 years old, however, I just reread the book! So…recycling and expanding. It’s fine! la la la just never you mind I READ THIS IN ONE SITTING. It’s funny, it’s dark, it’s cartoonish, it’s Tarantinoesque, it’s either brilliant social/political/economic/mental health commentary or the rantings of a crazy person. Or both. I loved it. The friend who gave it to me said, “Yeah, he is pretty […]

Three friends, a revolution, and (for me) a look at our literary biases

Good True Thai by Sunisa Manning

January 4, 2021 by denesteak 2 Comments

Last year came and went with the stillness of a thrashing fish out of water — I certainly don’t need to recap what an astoundingly not-normal year 2020 was. We were all just doing our best, gasping for air while picking up new hobbies to distract ourselves from the pandemic, racial injustice, the world ending, etc. And this is where I let you non-Asia readers in on a secret: While the US and Europe played cat-and-mouse with the virus (seriously, does anyone really know what […]

The Devil’s Dictionary – sarcasm so biting it should come with a warning label

The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce

January 4, 2021 by MarkAbaddon Leave a Comment

Ambrose Bierce is one of the most underappreciated writers in history. Although a peer of Mark Twain’s, his works have not received the same level of scrutiny and appreciation as Mr. Clemens, which is a shame. Obviously, being a pseudo-dictionary, there really is not a plot or story to summarize within The Devil’s Dictionary. What is there is insight, cultural commentary and a wit so biting it could cleave armor. The edition that I have also includes illustrations by the brilliant Ralph Steadman who takes […]
