“We are never feckless”, I told her coldly. “We are full to the brim with feck.”

An Unexpected Peril by Deanna Raybourn

May 10, 2021 by Malin Leave a Comment

Spoiler warning! This is book 6 in an ongoing series. There will be minor spoilers for earlier books in the series. You can read these without having any background, but it’s always best to start at the beginning, which happens to be A Curious Beginning.    Intrepid lepidopterist and sometime crime solver Veronica Speedwell and her grouchy partner and now lover Revelstoke Templeton-Vane (goes by Stoker) are working on preparing a memorial exhibition at the Curiosity Club for one of its recently deceased members, pioneer mountain climber […]

“What a fool. What a destructive, romantic, ridiculous act. It was always a certain kind of ass who approached love like that”.

Harrow the Ninth: The Locked Tomb trilogy vol. 2 by Tamsyn Muir

May 3, 2021 by Dome'Loki 16 Comments

Spoiler free review of Harrow the Ninth. I started Harrow at the wrong time.  When I began in mid-February, I didn’t know my dog was about to have an emergency that would lead to his passing within a month.  I couldn’t focus and the book deserved more attention.  I put it down for a long time and read comfort fluff.  When I picked Harrow back up again I would read it off and on.  One night I was determined to finish it, stayed up way too […]

Covered in cheese and baked in the oven

Cat's Cookbook by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler

May 3, 2021 by enaj Mcbob Leave a Comment

Another stunning entry into the Acorn Wood Library with Cat’s Cookbook.  This was pre-ordered based on the fun we had with Rabbits Nap, and I have to say we were not disappointed. It would appear to be a family trait that we a) struggle to read the cover and acknowledge the “Lift the flap” notice, and then b) swear in front of a small child when we get to said flaps.  In my dads defence, these things are incredibly stiff in new books and I’m […]

Trees move slowly. Sometimes books about trees do, also.

The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate by Peter Wohlleben

May 2, 2021 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

Peter Wohlleben is a man to be admired. Having graduated from a forestry school in Germany, he worked for the forestry commission for more than 20 years but eventually became disillusioned by the common use of what he considered to be damaging forestry practices. He began applying his own ideas as manager of an ecologically-friendly beech forest, and he shares his knowledge and passion in the multiple books he’s written about trees. The Hidden Life of Trees, a New York Times bestseller, aims to make trees […]

Hell for Haller

The Law of Innocence by Michael Connelly

May 2, 2021 by enaj Mcbob Leave a Comment

For some reason this has been sat on my bedside table since Christmas.  Normally when I get the new Michael Connelly, I devour it immediately but for some reason this one was put to one side and I read other things first.  That all changed yesterday when I picked up the book and read it in one sitting. Connelly is probably best known for his Harry Bosch novels, and it scares me to realise how long I have been reading them.  He is the only […]

Horribly accurate book about British people

Very British Problems by Rob Temple

May 1, 2021 by enaj Mcbob Leave a Comment

As a non-social media user, yes there are still some of us out there, I wasn’t familiar with the Very British Problems twitter feed @SoVeryBritish and instead thought it was just a column in The Daily Telegraph.  If you’re now forming an opinion of me based on this evidence, you’re probably not wrong. The book appears to have been marketed for the British population when I believe, having now read it, that it should in fact be viewed as an invaluable guide for anyone wishing […]
