Sometimes a team needs an enemy to unite them.

Us Against You by Fredrik Backman

June 9, 2021 by Leedock 3 Comments

Apparently it’s my summer of Backman (or Spring/Summer of Backman since almost 90 degree weather day after day isn’t really summer until the calendar says so). Loved Beartown, so I am more than happy to spend time with its inhabitants in this follow up, regardless of the season. This book picks up shortly after Beartown is turned upside down in the wake of an assault. Sides are drawn and redrawn. Narratives are rewritten. Blame is shifted. Teams are renamed. It’s a whirlwind of gaslighting, denial, anger, shame and […]

…culture is as much about what we encourage as what we actually permit.

Beartown by Fredrik Backman

June 9, 2021 by Leedock 1 Comment

This book needs to be required reading for older middle school, or first year high schoolers. I can’t think of a more instructive book about the intoxicating nature of power and popularity and the primal pull of self preservation. If you add any tool to a child’s life skills toolbox, let it be empathy. With empathy comes strength, resilience and just being a decent freaking human being. We could use more of that in the world. The subject matter here is something that could easily […]

An Unexpected Peril by Deanna Raybourn

June 9, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

Dear Ms Raybourn: You may never stop writing your Veronica Speedwell novels. I will not permit it. Many thanks. Book 6 in the Veronica Speedwell Mystery series, is, as they all are, a damn delight. If you haven’t read them, please do. If you do read them, know that this one does not disappoint. Everyone’s favorite lepidopterist and taxidermist are on a momentary mystery solving and near death experiencing lull. As they work side by side to create an exhibit honoring the late mountain climber Alice Baker-Greene […]

They say thriller; I say crap

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

June 5, 2021 by KimMiE" 3 Comments

I didn’t appreciate how much this novel truly annoyed me until I was bemoaning to a friend how it spent some 25 weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list. Thinking I didn’t like it because it is basically fluff (which it is), she said, “Well, look how long Da Vinci Code was on the bestseller list,” and I shot back, “Da Vinci Code was a masterpiece next to this book!” And I stand by that. I may have issues with The Da Vinci Code, but […]

Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

The Professor and the Parson by Adam Sisman

June 5, 2021 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

The dust jacket for The Professor and the Parson is adorned with compelling praise: “utterly mad and wholly delightful,” “lively,” “a roller coaster ride,” “delicious,” “weirdly compelling.” This book is, in fact, none of these things. The only quote I can kind of get on board with is from British magazine Emerald Street, which calls it “astonishing,” as I find it astonishing that people could have enjoyed this book. Reading this was such a slog, the title of this review reflects what I heard in […]

Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

June 3, 2021 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

I received this book as part of last year’s holiday book exchange (thank you coffeeshopreader for yet ANOTHER outstanding choice!). Having never read any of Leigh Bardugo’s books but having seen them glowingly reviewed here, I thought it was time to see what the fuss is about. Ninth House is definitely worthy of fuss, and I am already looking forward to the next volume. This fantasy novel is set in New Haven, Connecticut, at Yale University, and at heart it is a detective novel with […]
