“Home was wherever she planted herself…”

The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration by Isabel Wilkerson

July 22, 2021 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Cbr13bingo Home The Warmth of Other Suns, a National Book Award Winner, is a riveting study of the “Great Migration,” i.e., the movement of millions of Black Americans from the South to urban centers in the North and West during the period from 1915 to 1970. Isabel Wilkerson interviewed some 1200 participants in this migration in addition to scouring news sources, government studies, literature and more to provide this detailed and profoundly moving portrait of the generations of Black Americans who transformed not only their […]

Epic enemies to lovers and queer romance for The Chosen One

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

July 21, 2021 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

CBR 13 Bingo: Gateway – Carry On is the gateway to Simon Snow and Rowell’s World of Mages. After watching Rainbow Rowell for the book release of Any Way the Wind Blows, I wanted to re-read Carry On and Wayward Son to fall in love with Simon and Baz all over again.  However, they didn’t fit into my bingo plan, then Malin helpfully suggested that Carry On works for Gateway and Wayward Son for Rep.  I didn’t have a book picked for either square yet so […]

The Rain Wild Chronicles – Ragtag band of misfits and dragons find a home

The Dragon Keeper by Robin Hobb

Dragon Haven by Robin Hobb

City of Dragons by Robin Hobb

Blood of Dragons by Robin Hobb

July 20, 2021 by Merryn Leave a Comment

CBR13 Bingo (in order) – Travel, The Wilds, Cityscape, Home I’ve read the other books in Robin Hobbs interlinked series many times, and the Farseer Trilogy is one of my favourite alltime reads.  But for some reason I’d passed over the Rain Wild Chronicles until now.  Maybe I’d heard it was a weaker link in the chain?  If so, I heard right.  The characters lack the depth and humanity I expect from Hobb, and were too neatly paired off by the series end.  Nothing […]

Triplets struggle against lifelong stereotypes

Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty

July 20, 2021 by Merryn Leave a Comment

CBR13bingo: Libations I read this book after trawling through my extensive unread collection on my Kindle looking for something with food on the cover for Bingo.  It was an easy enjoyable read.  A bit like a well-made cupcake. It’s a very Liane Moriarty book, about three sisters, triplets, struggling to break out of the stereotypes they have been cast in since their youth.  There’s the driven one, the wild one, the ditzy one.  They all live in picturesque housing that would look great on TV, […]

The book Fugitive Telemetry is standing next to two wind up robot toys.

“Possibly I should just stop complaining like a human and get on with it.”

Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells

July 14, 2021 by Dome'Loki 5 Comments

CBR 13 Bingo: Machinery Fugitive Telemetry fills the gap between the ending of the fourth Murderbot novella, Exit Strategy, and the follow up full length novel Network Effect.  As such it helps bridge Murderbot’s development, from the uncertainty of suddenly becoming a free individual to the more confident, and comfortable in their role, Murderbot of Network Effect.  Physically size wise, Fugitive Telemetry is on par with the other novellas, however, it felt more like a short story to me.  Perhaps that has to do with the action […]

Nancy Drew: Girl Detective, White Whale

The Secret of the Old Clock: Nancy Drew Mystery #1 by Carolyn Keene, Mildred Benson

July 14, 2021 by ElCicco 2 Comments

Cbr13bingo White Whale I somehow managed to make it into my 6th decade having never read a single Nancy Drew book. I have always been somewhat ashamed of this given how great an impact Nancy Drew novels have had on so many women. It’s even more shocking and shameful when I recall that growing up, there were dozens of the Nancy Drew novels in my bedroom closet!! My sister read them all, and I’m pretty sure my mom and aunts had read them when they […]
