An interesting concept, but I was still confused at times

Dead Wednesday by Jerry Spinelli

December 26, 2021 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

I’m not sure how I feel about Jerry Spinelli as an author.  Some things I like, Stargirl for example, and some are a bit too weird, like Hokey Pokey.  Dead Wednesday has a bit of both, although it feels more like Stargirl.  I do have some lingering questions that I know will never be answered, though.   Dead Wednesday is an interesting concept.  The overall idea is that for one day, every eighth grader gets the name of a teenager who died during the past […]

This book hits differently when you’re going through it

You Can Thank Me Later by Kelly Harms

December 26, 2021 by crystalclear 1 Comment

Whelp, this one hit home a bit more than I would have liked.  I picked this up on Audible last year or the year before (I don’t really remember) and decided to finally listen to it around this Thanksgiving.  The main story revolves around a family of siblings meeting every year for Thanksgiving, and we see three different years (I think they’re at least two or three years apart.)  The first year, the oldest brother is married with a child on the way.  The younger […]

A slightly happier ending to this story of fatal foes than Romeo and Juliet

Fated Blades by Ilona Andrews

December 26, 2021 by Malin Leave a Comment

4.5 stars This was an ARC from Netgalley. My views and opinions are my own. On the alien planet of Rada, most of the powerful families have genetic abilities in some way or another, but the ones born with lethal combat abilities are the fiercest of rivals, and none more so than the Adlers and the Baenas. They are constantly vying to be the most dominant, and now both families are close to discovering the secrets behind their genetic abilities. Matias Baena, head of his […]

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

December 19, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

Coming off the high of reading the first couple of A Crown of Thorn and Roses books, I enjoyed the first book in this trilogy but was a little less enthusiastic about it. Compared to the ACOTAR books, well, I just wasn’t feeling the same pull. They share a lot of the same things: heroines who struggle with their “powers,” love triangles, fantastical worlds, but Shadow and Bone didn’t quite suck me into the story as much. I think part of it was having a hard time with the […]

A Court of Frost and Starlight by Sarah J. Maas

December 19, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the next book in this series. Expecting a hefty tome like the preceding books, I was kind of disappointed when I picked up this thin little volume from the library. I was ready to tuck in for the long haul, but this 4th book is more like a novella. However, it does take place during Solstice celebrations so slightly festive and somewhat appropriate timing for me to be reading it now. Again, this is book 4 so […]

You’re never going to believe who ended up being my hero.

Because of Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn

December 19, 2021 by Leedock Leave a Comment

When I sat down to compile my best of/worst of list for 2021, Quinn’s books fell on both. I guess you will have to wait until the lists are published in a couple of weeks, but I will say that I credit the Bridgerton series with getting me out of my pandemic reading slump. They were just the page turners to yank me out of my anxiety jumbled brain. Once I dispensed with the “main” books in the series, I had to hunt down all […]
