I hated it so much

Prior Bad Acts by Tami Hoag

July 6, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

If you subscribe to the Tucker Carlson school of policing, this is a thriller for you.  For everyone else, I would advise looking elsewhere for better written characters, less clichés and a more nuanced view of law and order in Minneapolis. The action opens with our soon to be damsel in distress, Minneapolis Judge Carey Moore, making a private chambers decision to prevent evidence of ‘prior bad acts’ being introduced into a murder trial she is presiding over.  Hoag’s villain, a loner with a fetish […]

Reading the rainbow for CBR Bingo

Butterflies are Free by Leonard Gershe

July 6, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Written by Leonard Gershe, who also wrote the script for the Audrey Hepburn film Funny Face, Butterflies are Free is a play that premiered in 1969 with Blythe Danner (Gwyneth’s ma) in one of the starring roles. It was adapted into a 1972 film starring Goldie Hawn and Eileen Heckart, the latter of whom won an Oscar for best supporting actress.  Who knew?!  My background prior to the google search that provided that info was that my parents went to college for performing arts in […]

Marshmallow fluff of mystery novels

The Serial Killers Club by Jeff Povey

July 6, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

This is a light, breezy mystery novel, written from the perspective of a not-so-bright serial killer imposter who inadvertently becomes a killer of serial killers.  You will not get attached to any of the characters and this is not a character study of depravity or look at any sort of cultural issues. This is a somewhat silly whodunnit that I would recommend if you need that kind of junk food reading snack in your larger reading pantry- the marshmallow fluff of mystery novels if you […]

New car, caviar, four-star daydream. (CBR12Bingo: I WISH)

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

July 6, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

This might be a little bit of a cheat, because I don’t actually want to be “Crazy Rich.” But bog-standard garden variety rich? That I could do.  My 2007 Toyota Yaris just broke in a way that will cost half the blue book value to fix, and I’m lucky enough that I have a 401K to take a loan against for the replacement car’s down payment. But man, would it be nice to have a “just for the hell of it” trip to Paris to […]

Murder in the marshes

Death of an Expert Witness by P.D. James

July 6, 2020 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

Death of an Expert Witness feels like a classic P.D. James Dalgliesh novel- a forensic scientist with a lot of enemies is discovered murdered in the lab, and Dalgliesh is called in to find out whodunnit.  The setting for this Dalgliesh outing is a private forensic lab near the small town of Ely, which is 14 miles north of Cambridge.  Ely is part of England’s fenlands, which is a low-lying coastal plain similar to Holland.  James’ ability to tie her mysteries to her setting is […]

They’ve got the beat (CBR12BINGO: Music)

The Song Machine: Inside the Hit Factory by John Seabrook

July 6, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

I think my favorite random fact about music as an industry is that “I Write the Songs,” Barry Manilow’s signature song, was written by someone else. (Well, that and the fact that Christine McVie told her ex-husband that “You Make Lovin Fun – a song where the next line after the titular one is “and I don’t have to tell you that you’re the only one” was about their dog instead of her new boyfriend on a song he had to play on because he […]
