cbr12bingo – Red!

Lies Sleeping by Ben Aaronovitch

September 7, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Every entry into Rivers of London starts with a splash; we are always diving head-first, sometimes literally, into rivers of blood. Every delightful cover, all done by Patrick Knowles, is a map with a big, red, bloody “X” marking the spot. Every cover is a map, every map is filled with teensy tiny detail, and every seemingly unrelated sketch or nursery rhyme lyric builds together into the marvelous mess that is London. I love his minute details; I feel like I’m looking at a Where’s Waldo illustration for […]

Medallion Status: True Stories from Secret Rooms by John Hodgman

September 7, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

“Hey, it’s John Hodgman!” John Hodgman used to spend a considerable amount of time on TV. He’s played, in his words, all sorts of “sexless weirds” in TV and commercials alike. He spent time on The Daily Show as, among other things, a deranged billionaire. He left his Daily Show role behind as Trump rose to power, as there is nothing funny anymore about criminally insane rich people.  He isn’t spending too much time on TV at the moment; it’s been years since he was the PC of […]

Power Dynamics

Necessary People by Anna Pitoniak

September 7, 2020 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

BINGO: Friendship Best for: People who enjoy a quick, unexpected read, a bit in the style of Gone Girl. In a nutshell: Violet is a quiet woman who comes from a background of limited means. Stella is a very rich woman (think family money + Instagram influencer glam). They meet at college and become close friends. But that friendship seems reliant on each of them fulfilling their roles, and when one steps out, things get … rough. Worth quoting: “It wasn’t that my personality changed […]

Not a damn turtle in sight

Turtles All the Way Down by John Green

September 6, 2020 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

CBR12 BINGO: Orange I keep trying to like young adult fiction, to the point where it might be unfair of me to review the genre, since it’s clearly not my thing. There are exceptions, of course (my recent discovery of Eleanor & Park stands out), but generally all I can expect from YA is a solid character to whom teenagers can relate. Turtles All the Way Down scores in its representation of a teenage girl with severe anxiety and OCD, but the rest of it just […]

Light Entertainment But With Dragons

Dragon Actually by G.A. Aiken

September 6, 2020 by Jen K 2 Comments

Bingo Square: Red (cover is red) I had actually picked this up as a Kindle Deal because dragons before I read emmalita’s review of the Honeybadger books, written by this author under a different name.  The Honeybadger books were incredibly entertaining but I also think her style is probably better in small doses and that reading too many of them in a short period would ruin what makes them so entertaining.  As a result, I held off on this for a bit of time. It […]

A Bit Mellow for a Smuggling Pirate Heroine

Destiny's Captive by Beverly Jenkins

September 6, 2020 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: UnCannon I picked this one up because it came up a while back on The Ripped Bodice’s Instagram as a recommendation for one of their summer bingo categories (I am not participating in that bingo, one is enough). I read Indigo a few years ago, and appreciated how well researched and educational it was; since then I have seen Beverly Jenkins comment once in a while on Twitter and have always meant to check out another one of her novels. This one was […]
