A fun, original contemporary romance

Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes

October 7, 2020 by Sophia Leave a Comment

CBR12 Bingo: “I wish…” I first saw Evvie Drake Starts Over (2020) by Linda Holmes on the shelf at the library. I was intrigued. I’m a fan of good romance novels and this looked like one I’d enjoy. I’m also using this book for the Cannonball Bingo “I wish” category. Romance novels are wish fulfillment in writing. And I think it’d be nice to live in an idyllic Maine town and fall in love with a professional athlete. I did enjoy this novel. Evvie was a fun […]

Any Atwood is a good Gateway to Atwood (CBR12Bingo 2: Gateway)

The Tent by Margaret Atwood

October 7, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

My absolute far and away favorite Margaret Atwood book is The Blind Assassin, but that’s like the dessert at the end of an excellent meal. You have to work up to it. Handmaid’s Tale is another solid choice, and my own introduction to Margaret Atwood’s awesomenaucity, but I’ve already reviewed it twice for CBR (I think – definitely once).  I love so many of her novels, but for different reasons. So I’m going with The Tent, because the best way to experience Atwood is by […]

I’m waiting for the Baudelaires to meet the One Trick Pony (CBR12Bingo 2: No Money)

The Miserable Mill by Lemony Snicket

October 7, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

Ya’ll, I’m kind of glad this was my “No Money” square because I think I’d be irritated if I spent actual money on this book. Might be my second least favorite of the series, but I found a pile of these at Goodwill for a dollar, and then used loyalty points to get them for free. I had to buy #1 because there were 2-6 present, so of course I’d pay for the one I liked the least. We’re dealing with a pretty predictable pattern […]

Beautiful music together (CBR12Bingo 2: Music)

Something Wonderful by Todd S Purdum

October 7, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

When Rodgers and Hammerstein collaborated with Irving Berlin, Berlin was worried about credit and quite possibly the reputation of the other two, fond of quoting his couplet “There goes time with your last year’s prize/ Whittling it down to its proper size.” Which, of course, seems ridiculous given that Berlin, Rodgers, and Hammerstein are still titans half a century after their heyday, but it’s nice to see that even the mighty have their anxieties. The book follows Rodgers from his early days writing music with […]

Wets, Drys, and Hypocrites

Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition by Daniel Okrent

October 7, 2020 by blauracke Leave a Comment

In January 1920, the 18th Amendment went into effect, prohibiting “the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all the territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes.” Daniel Okrent describes how it came to this point, and what happened during the 13 years it was in place. This is a very well-researched book with tons of facts about the era and the people that were most involved in the […]

My childhood #Gateway into the genre I love most

The Black Cauldron by Lloyd Alexander

The Castle of Llyr by Lloyd Alexander

Taran Wanderer by Lloyd Alexander

October 7, 2020 by Aquillia 19 Comments

Bingo Square: Gateway Bingo #1! Red/Gateway/Fresh Start/Cannonballer Says/Money I have loved fantasy since I can remember. I don’t actually remember when I started reading it, but I credit it to my deep and abiding love for Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain Chronicles. Although I have no vivid memories of the first time I read it (aside from one shocking moment in The Black Cauldron), I reread the series regularly throughout my childhood and my teenage years. I loved them every time. Aside from The Book of Three, which […]
