Another faerie murder mystery for October Daye

A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire

October 31, 2020 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire is the second book in the October Daye series. I reviewed Rosemary and Rue for CBR11, so it’s only natural I pick the series back up for CBR 12. This novel finds the changeling Toby stumbling upon an unexpected murder mystery in Silicon Valley. As his knight, Toby can’t refuse a request from Sylvester, the Duke of Shadowed Hills. His kingdom is the faerie land closest to San Francisco. He wants her to check on his niece, January. She […]

Sexy magic boots

Kicking It by Faith Hunter and Kalayna Price

October 31, 2020 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

When the ‘rona hit, I found it hard to concentrate on a book. If you’re in a slump, I highly recommend trying an anthology from your favorite genre. Kicking It was edited by Faith Hunter and Kalayna Price. I haven’t read any Jane Yellowrock books, but her story made me order the first book. I stumbled across the anthology more so for Price who wrote the Alex Craft books, which was my be favorite series from last year. I took a lot of breaks between […]

Blacking out BINGO with Liz Lighty and her crown. #CBRBingo – Violet

You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson

October 31, 2020 by narfna 4 Comments

I was drawn to this book by the positive reviews, yes, but first by the unbelievable cuteness that is this cover and title. (This impulse also kind of bit me in the butt, more on that later.) You Should See Me in a Crown follows Liz Lighty, high school senior, who lives in a town that is utterly obsessed by prom. It is a Big Deal. The Queen and King even get scholarships. So, when funding for Liz’s college falls through (and she doesn’t want […]

“They took everything and ground it down to dust as fine as gunpowder, they fired their guns into the air in victory and the strays flew out into the nothingness of histories written wrong and meant to be forgotten. Stray bullets and consequences are landing on our unsuspecting bodies even now.” #CBRBingo – Orange

There There by Tommy Orange

October 31, 2020 by narfna 2 Comments

I have complained about literary fiction before, and I will complain about it again. But this book is a great example of the genre, in part because Tommy Orange is so good at his craft (this is a debut!!), but I think also because he is an author that provides a voice that is marginalized. He has things to say. The book itself is seeking (in part) to reckon with the idea of the modern Indian, the Urban Indian, and it does so with not […]

Music and dragons

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

October 31, 2020 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman follows a young girl who lives for music. An excellent pick for the music square for CBR 12 Bingo. The novel is set in a fictional kingdom of Goredd where dragons and humans have found a fragile peace. The dragons in this book are scholars who love cold logic and have a hankering for math too. They can transform into a human form to take up these pursuits. A murder mystery unfolds that opens up old wounds between the two races. A […]
