Realizing that I need to review some of these books so that I remember I actually read them this year.

The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams

Call Me Maybe by Cara Bastone

December 20, 2020 by scootsa1000 5 Comments

Every year I keep a long list of the books that I read during CBR that I didn’t have a chance to review. Looking at the very long list for 2020 made me realize that if I don’t write down my thoughts (as I have for the past 11 years), I will never remember that I read any of these. Ergo, here are some smaller reviews, wrapped up in a larger review. I hope to spit a few of these out before CBR13 starts! The […]

Unsustainable human society hammered into the meridian of an alien planet

The City in the Middle of the Night by Charlie Jane Anders

December 19, 2020 by Merryn 2 Comments

January is a tide-locked planet, one side permanently cold dark night, one blinding searing day, with human colonists clinging to precarious life on the narrow boundary.  Outside of the human cities the monsters will kill you if the planet doesn’t get you first. Xiosphant is a socially rigid city state, forcing the endless twilight into an intricate regime of well-ordered citizens.  “Everyone in Xiosphant was weirdly polite, just so long as you pretended all their made-up stuff was real.” Sophie is a student from the […]

Where it started, how it’s going/Cannonball

Markings by Dag Hammarskjold

December 19, 2020 by ElCicco 10 Comments

My first review of CBR12 was Of Mice and Men, and I noted in the review that it was one of the most depressing books I have ever read. It feels like that book set the tone for 2020. By mid-March, reading for fun was … difficult. All the worries and fears surrounding COVID encroached on everything I read. Now that we have made it to the end of the year and there is a light at the end of the tunnel — a change […]

Deadly! (It’s a good thing)

Top End Girl by Miranda Tapsell

December 18, 2020 by Merryn Leave a Comment

Miranda Tapsell is a proud Larrakia and Tiwi woman from Australia’s Northern Territory, growing up in Darwin and the small town of Jabiru in the Kakadu National Park.  Her memoir is fairly light and breezy, but doesn’t shy away from the complexities of being a biracial Indigenous woman in a country and industry with a lot to learn about treating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures with the respect they deserve. Miranda always loved to perform, but it wasn’t until Arrerente and Arabana […]

Sometimes you have to open your eyes and jump

One and Only by Jenny Holiday

December 17, 2020 by Malin Leave a Comment

Official book description: With her bridezilla friend on a DIY project rampage, bridesmaid Jane Denning will do anything to escape – even if it means babysitting the groom’s troublemaker brother before the wedding. It should be a piece of cake, except the “cake” is a sarcastic former soldier who is 100% wicked hotness and absolutely off-limits.   Cameron MacKinnon is ready to let loose after returning from his deployment. But first he’ll have to sweet talk the ultra-responsible Jane into taking a walk on the […]

I want to wrap myself up in this book cover and live happily ever after.

LOOK at how beautiful this book by CL Polk is. I want this pattern in pjs and sheets and a phone case. It is just so pretty. Plus, it sounds amazing and I can’t wait to read it. I’ve had Whiteout on my TBR for a while and will crack it open to start off CBR13. The chocolate is delicious and I am hiding it from my kids. Thank you, Emmalita. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas!!
