Bitter Falls (Stillhouse Lake Book #4) by Rachel Caine

January 23, 2020 by Melina Leave a Comment

I am a sucker for a series with a strong, capable woman.  Add the fact that she’s a mom on a mission? I’m alway sold.  I’m easy…always have been.  To catch you up, the Stillhouse Lake series is about a woman, Gina Royal, who comes home to find out that her husband was a serial killer and that he had been killing people under her nose for years (in a sound proof hobby room in the garage).  People did not believe that she wasn’t aiding […]

…another man and what he wanted from me was the last thing I needed

Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams

January 22, 2020 by Leedock 1 Comment

This was a popular CBR11 book and I mostly agree with everyone’s previous reviews. It is a truthful, funny, and often cringe-inducing look at a young woman in crisis. Queenie is 25 years old, uninspired by her job, and going through what she thinks is a temporary rough patch in her relationship with her live-in boyfriend, Tom. As Queenie gradually becomes aware that Tom is pulling further away from her, she begins seeking solace and affirmation in all of the wrong places. The lingering instability […]

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren

January 21, 2020 by Malin 1 Comment

Olive Torres loves her twin sister Ami, but while her sister, the eternal winner has been able to finance her entire wedding through various contest winnings, Olive is eternally unlucky. The bridesmaid dress she’s going to have to wear is a truly luminous green monstrosity (but it was free!), she has just been laid off from her job, and the best man, who she’ll have to spend much of her sister wedding day alongside, is the groom’s brother, Ethan Thomas, probably Olive’s least favourite person […]

Seven Stones to Stand or Fall by Diana Gabaldon

January 19, 2020 by Leedock Leave a Comment

Many of the book series that I enjoy have novellas or short stories available electronically. I’m not a Kindle person so I generally end up missing out on these smaller literary nuggets that explore secondary characters or flesh out backstories. I bought this when it was published over two years ago, but allowed it to languish on my TBR pile until now. Outlander books take preparation. They are heavy tomes and I need to be ready to brew a cup of tea and snuggle up for a […]

One Hundred Apocalypses and Other Apocalypses by Lucy Corin

January 18, 2020 by plaidhamster Leave a Comment

I don’t know if I liked this book or not. When I started it I loved it. The three longer form stories that open Lucy Corin’s One Hundred Apocalypses and Other Apocalypses are propulsive and intense. I read them sitting on a curb in the parking lot during a break at work. The second story “Madmen” about a world where young ladies are taken to a shelter to pick out a Madman to care for are a rite of passage into adulthood, is a soulful comment […]

Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs?: Big Questions from Tiny Mortals About Death by Caitlin Doughty

January 18, 2020 by KimMiE" 3 Comments

I am always on the lookout for science-y books that make science accessible to literature majors like myself. Bonus points if the topic is slightly quirky, such as brain abnormalities, digestive processes, or corpses. Because I’m a lucky gal, my husband also stays on the lookout for these types of books, and for Christmas he bought me Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs? (Eat your hearts out, ladies!) I wasn’t familiar with Caitlin Doughty, but I soon learned that she is a New York Times best-selling […]
