Destiny! Destiny! No escaping it for me!

The Sword of Destiny: Tales of the Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski

February 11, 2020 by ElCicco 2 Comments

This second Witcher volume, like the first, is a collection of short stories not necessarily told in chronological order. Sapkowski further develops the main character Geralt of Rivia while hitting hard on themes of a changing world and the role of fate and destiny in Geralt’s life. Some of the stories were featured in the TV series, and the reader gets to know characters like Dandelion (Jaskier) and Yennefer a little better. Sword of Destiny includes six stories, the first of which will be familiar […]

Lloyd Alexander was definitely a fan of cats

Time Cat: The Remarkable Journeys of Jason and Gareth by Lloyd Alexander

February 11, 2020 by Dome'Loki 4 Comments

Growing up I adored Lloyd Alexander for the Prydain Chronicles and the Vesper Holly series.  Fun side note, I suggested Vesper as a name for our second daughter because of loving Vesper Holly and how well Eva Green carried it in Casino Royale but it was nixed by my SO. Time Cat floated around in my awareness but for some reason I never picked it up.  Perhaps because the copies in my library had an atrocious cover.  The one on the right would definitely have […]

Adding F*ck to the title makes it seem deeper

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life by Mark Manson

February 8, 2020 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck should be used in marketing classes as prime example of what you can achieve with proper positioning. This book contains some pretty basic self-help advice (decent advice, for the most part) but appeals to a new audience by including fuck in the title. People who scoff at self-help are apt to pick it up and think, “Hey, this guy swears, he must be like me, not like those ultra touchy, feel-gooders who have a Ph.D. in Musicology but […]

Took me a bit to settle into but then I was entertained by this sequel

Vengeful by V.E. Schwab

February 7, 2020 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

V.E. (Victoria) Schwab has become one of my favorite authors since I found her with the 2015 release of A Darker Shade of Magic. When the sequel came out, I expressed my love for the first book to the bookseller ringing me up, they asked if I had read Vicious yet, I had not.  Vicious was my introduction to Schwab outside of the DSoM series. Shortly thereafter I devoured her YA “Monsters of Verity” duology, and in the past year read the first in her middle […]

An open letter to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Anna Waterhouse

Mycroft and Sherlock: The Empty Birdcage by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Anna Waterhouse

February 2, 2020 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

Mr. Abdul-Jabbar and Ms. Waterhouse, Thank you for hearing my plea for more volumes in your wonderful Mycroft Holmes series. As I noted in my review of the first two novels, these books bring me such pure joy that as soon as I put one down, I regret having read so quickly. On top of that, this latest novel had me thinking that surely someone must be contemplating a movie or television series so I can enjoy the stories again in another dimension. To that […]

A Hard Life And Dark Magic

The Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo

February 2, 2020 by BlackRabbit Leave a Comment

The story itself doesn’t shy away from the dangers of both life for young women (which may be very troubling for some readers-many serious issues are discussed and Alex has had a hard life) and unfettered magic use in this world. Alex’s backstory is engaging and while she has a clever retort for most situations, the pain and trouble that fuels her make the young woman very sympathetic. Please feel free to take a look at my other reviews.
