“What’s to become of us? We can’t go on like this.”

Innocence by Penelope Fitzgerald

July 13, 2019 by vel veeter 2 Comments

I sometimes really like Penelope Fitzgerald novels and sometimes don’t. I didn’t particularly like her Booker Prize winning novel, Offshore, in part because it didn’t feel like an award winning novel in the ways that others from the prize absolutely do. I did however, really love her novel The Bookshop, and liked The Golden Child quite a bit. Some parts of this novel I like a lot. We are in Italy and dealing with the Ridolfi family, a historically connected Florentine family who, like a […]

Wonderful

A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

July 13, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

If you, like me, have ever adored and also been bewildered by someone who can best be described as ‘crotchety’ or ‘cantankerous’, I highly recommend that you read this book. A Man Called Ove is a lovely peek in to the life of a salty old man and the life events that formed his world view. Ove is a widower and is trying to commit suicide in various well-planned ways. He likes no one, has no family or friends, and is ready to join his […]

The war had made a man of him! It had coarsened him and hardened him. There was no other way to look at it.

Some Do Not by Ford Madox Ford

No More Parades by Ford Madox Ford

July 12, 2019 by vel veeter Leave a Comment

Cbr11Bingo – Classics Some Do Not This is the opening novel of the Ford Madox Ford tetralogy, Parade’s End. I imagine he’s as well-known for this novel as his other major work The Good Soldier, but this definitely feels like the culminating work. For one thing, the four novels together are over 800 pages, and while The Good Soldier is a very good novel, this feels like a much more sweeping statement on the world. The lead character is statistician and war officer, Christopher Tietjens, […]

CBR11Bingo: Youths!

The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson

July 12, 2019 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

Maureen Johnson has contributed short stories to YA collections that I’ve read before, but The Vanishing Stair and its predecessor, Truly Devious, are the first stand-alone YA novels (Youths!) that I’ve read by her. The Vanishing Stair, in my opinion, really improves on the first book — mostly because it focuses solely on my favorite character, Stevie. However, you really need to read the first one before you read the sequel so go run and do that before you read my review. I’ll wait. “He looked a […]

In A Hopeless Place

The Feral Detective by Jonathan Lethem

July 12, 2019 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read as part of CBR11 Bingo: Listicle. “20 Best Crime Novels of 2018” -crimereads.com It’s interesting to me that Jonathan Lethem’s The Feral Detective made CrimeReads.com’s list of 20 best crime novels of 2018 considering how widely panned it was. Many reviewers said some variety of “How can the man who wrote Motherless Brooklyn produce such dreck?” I think such sentiment comes with unfortunately high expectations. I read Motherless Brooklyn earlier this year. It was excellent, definitely one of the best things I read in 2019. And it made me want […]

Intriguing YA Read Concept that Didn’t Quite Stick the Landing

Mercury by Hope Larson

July 12, 2019 by Lisa Bee Leave a Comment

CBR11 Bingo: Illustrated Picked up on a whim, this graphic novel features all black-and-white illustrations, which are simple but expressive, but the story itself was a bit fleeting to me. Split between the past and present, Mercury follows the journey of a teenage girl in Nova Scotia named Tara. She is currently living with her aunt, uncle, and cousin in her home town, after her mother is working in another province. After Tara and her mother’s house burned down a few years ago, she has […]
