Waiting for the companion album

Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

July 13, 2019 by Manimama 2 Comments

CBR11 Bingo Pajiba square. I had read glowing write-ups of this book seemingly everywhere. An oral history of a fictional band did not seem at all interesting to me- I tend to ignore oral histories even of bands/movies/shows I have loved- but the rave reviews had my interest piqued. I’m so glad I got over myself.   As I said, the book is written as an oral history provided by the members of the band, “the Six” as well as singer Daisy Jones, their management, […]

Lethal White by Robert Galbraith

July 13, 2019 by Manimama Leave a Comment

This book is for CBR Bingo Birthday square- I had to look up the birthdays of several authors before I figured out which review hit which square. Lethal White picks up hours after the events of Career of Evil– Robin Elacott is married and struggling through her own wedding reception as she comes to terms with her realization that she not only loves her job in Cormoran Strike’s private investigations firm, but that she may also have some feelings for Strike himself. She also discovers […]

Rich people are still the worst

The Dispatcher by John Scalzi

July 13, 2019 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

CBR11 Bingo Square- Science! The Dispatcher by John Scalzi was created as an audio book narrated by Zachary Quinto, and was a free monthly download for subscribers. I’ve only read one other Scalzi (I really should fix that) but this main character, Tony Valdez, is a similar type of main character, working in a morally gray area and not feeling that bad about it. In his world, most people cannot be murdered, they wake up in their beds, naked and with the clock starting again. […]

Quiet Girl in a Noisy World: An Introvert's Story by Debbie Tung

July 13, 2019 by KimMiE" 5 Comments

CBR11bingo: Illustrated My sister is visiting me from Philadelphia this week, and she said to me, “I have a cute book for you to read.” Lucky me, she pulls out a book that’s not only a perfect selection for the Illustrated BINGO square, but also as adorable as the tiny nose on the author’s self-illustrated face. Writer and artist Debbie Tung has assembled a collection of comics that tell the story of her life as an introvert. Her black and white ink sketches are simple […]

The Dullness of Medieval De’Ath

The Heretics of De'Ath by Howard of Warwick

July 13, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader 4 Comments

Bingo Review 3 (Summer Read): The premise of the Heretics of De’Ath is promising: very medieval medieval monk is accused of murder during an important debate (a Conclave) concerning whether or not Christ got sand in his sandals (Hermitage swears he didn’t do it- the murder that is), a weaver of adult tapestries gets involved, an ambitious younger son of an Earl shows up at the monastery, Church officials are corrupt, the abbot might be crazy, agents of the Vatican are afoot, and the King […]

Love and Politics Can Mix

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

July 13, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo Review 2 (Rainbow Flag): On the one hand, Red, White & Royal Blue is a cute, light romantic story about how the First Son of the USA and a Prince of England start out as nemeses, are forced by political circumstances to fake friendship, become friends for real, fall in love, get outed as a couple, and the face their new reality together. I don’t view this as spoilers since this is the kind of mostly feel good light read that you know will […]
