“A lengthy light bulb” from Teeth

Date & Time by Phil Kaye

July 26, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

#cbr11bingo #TheCollection Officially, I have not finished Phil Kaye’s debut poetry collection, Date & Time. However, I have about ten poems left, but feel confident I have gotten the point of his work. I will say that I am not sure of the title, Date & Time, other than saying he does do snapshots of different dates and times in his and his family lives; but I honestly think he might have come up with a stronger title. But that is just me and it […]

The Science of Leadership by Julian Barling

July 25, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

If you are looking for some light reading to put you to sleep, or wondering what a dry day in the Sahara would feel like in print form, this book is for you.  Whew, am I parched.  I received this book for free from the author when he presented at a professional women’s event I attended about 4 years ago.  I remember his presentation being largely uneventful- not exciting but no more boring than many other professional talks.  Then, because I was working at a […]

A lot of book, but worth it

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

July 25, 2019 by lowercasesee 1 Comment

This is not a small book. I read it on Kindle so I didn’t fully realize it, but The Priory of the Orange Tree is a solid 800 pages. This book could have been a pair of full-size novels. But having been impatiently waiting on George R.R. Martin to finish A Song of Ice and Fire, I’m not entirely mad that Shannon opted to wrap this all up in one go. Priory is standalone epic fantasy and boy is it epic. The novel covers continents and fills them with […]

“I would like to point out that I specifically asked for no hijinks…”

Lumberjanes: The Infernal Compass by Lilah Sturges, polterink

July 25, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR11Bingo – Rainbow Flag! The Lumberjanes’ latest adventure begins when troop leader Jen takes the scouts on an orienteering lesson.  Naturally, weird things begin to happen despite Jen’s plee for “no hijinks!” but the girls aren’t really to blame. Rather, their bizarre compass seems to be acting up, and the ‘janes start disappearing one by one, thrown into some sort of alternate void where they meet a cohort of robot butlers.  EVIL Robot Butlers?! But which conflict is worse: taking down a bunch of evil […]

Re-read of Little Women

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

July 24, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

“Little Women” takes place during the American Civil War. The four March sisters (Meg, Jo, Amy, and Beth) are home with their mother (Marmee) and their maid Hannah while their father (known as Father) is away fighting. What I found interesting about the March family was how progressive the attitudes of the parents were and how that helped shaped their four daughters. So here’s the thing. Amy is my favorite. I can’t help it. I know a lot of book readers love Jo the best, […]

Our Beloveds

Beloved by Toni Morrison

July 24, 2019 by Classic Leave a Comment

Not too much to say about this one except every word just drips with rawness. The question is what would you do? Would you do as Sethe did? Would you have done something differently? I can’t imagine being owned by someone. I can’t imagine my body not being mine to command. I can’t imagine my children being someone else’s property. “Beloved” follows Sethe, a former slave that managed to escape to Ohio more than a decade ago. However, Sethe is haunted by the choices she […]
